I frowned, staring at my phone in my hand. My conscience was trying to tell me it was a prank caller, but it seemed a little full on for that. I carefully placed my phone back on the counter, shaking my head. Stupid random people calling me telling me cryptic crap I don't fully understand.
"Who was that?" Oh right. Tom was still here. Guilt flushed through my body for forgetting already that he was here. Oops.
"Uh, just some prank caller." I don't know why I lied to him. Was I trying to protect him? Not a clue.
"Rightio Terrie. You should probably call your parents about the money."
My eyes lit up as he reminded me. I went and grabbed the home phone and dialled the number of the hotel they'd left for me. Going through all the typical courtesies of connecting via reception, I waited patiently to speak to my parents. It'd been a few days since I'd talked to them.
"Hello?" A deeper voice spoke, weary with fatigue.
"Daddy!" I squealed. Well, that was embarrassing. I felt the heat rise to my cheeks as Tom chuckled away in the background.
"Hey there Ter-bear! This was unexpected! How are you sweetheart?"
"I'm great Dad, listen, I have a small favour to ask?" I was unsure as the amount I was going to ask for was quite a lot. Not for us really, but to be donating to someone else it was.
"Sure, what is it?" He sounded cheerful which was a good sign.
I gulped before continuing.
"Isitokayifwedonatefiftythousanddollarstoafriendsmumbecauseshe'sfinanciallynotverystableandifeelreallybadandwanttohelpher?"
"You'll have to repeat that Terrie."
"Um, is it okay if we donate fifty thousand dollars to a friends mum because she's financially not very stable and I feel really bad and want to help her?"
I could just imagine him doing his pondering face where he raises an eyebrow and just stares at you. It's kind of a creepy face actually.
"I guess you can. We do have more money than we need. Just organise for a direct transfer to her account through the bank and everything should be fine. Is that all sweetie?"
Wow. That was easier than I thought. God bless being Daddy's little girl. I then remembered my brother calling about his visit. Which I hadn't yet told my parents about.
"Oh, yeah! Adam's coming home a week after you guys get back."
"He's coming home! Permanently!" I heard my mother screech in the background. I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
"No, he's visiting. I'm not sure if he's bringing Indie with him or not." My mother's unhappy groan was quite loud considering she wasn't even on the phone.
"That's wonderful! We haven't seen him in, what, six months?"
"Yeah something like that. I'll make sure the house is pretty much ready for when he comes so you don't have to do much after your trip."
"Thanks honey. Anyway, we have a dinner we have to get to, so we'll talk to you later okay? I love you Ter-bear."
"Love you too Daddy. And Mum!" I shouted out for Mum's benefit.
