The afternoon sun rays shined in a white light through the blanket of chartreuse leaves that camouflaged their small group. The trees of the woods shielding them from the outside world like a dome of shining, soft green that formed itself from the mix of the beams and the chlorophyll.Ruby sank into a form of melancholia. The thought of Billy and their memories together always brought a smile to her face at first, but after a moment reality always sank in. The fact that their plans will never come to fruition, they will never have the chance to be parents, never hold each other again, never confess their love in hushed tones while tangled in each other's embrace. It was hard, still. She feels as if she is violating the rules of the universe by feeling so sad after so long. But yet, time passed so quickly. So slowly.
Only yesterday, they were driving down the empty streets of Hawkins with the windows down as the wind was running through their hair and moving it all over the place, Theatre of Pain playing in an uncharacteristically low volume as they drove all night long with no actual purpose. Just the one of enjoying each other's company for as long as they could. Parking the Camaro in an abandoned lot to move to the back seat and just stare, one into intoxicating seas of blue, and the other into never ending forests of hazel green. Ruby laying on top of Billy with her head propped up on the back of her hands, as they rested chest to chest and just stared. No words exchanged most of the times, only loving, adoring, admiring gazes. And it was enough.
Now, those days are gone, nothing more than painful memories, things of the past. She will never know again the warmth of his skin against hers, the beat of his heart just below the palm of her hand, the softness of his golden hair in between her fingers. Now, she needed to remind herself that it is how it is, that there is no changing it, and that she needed to move on from the pain, however hard it must be. Even if just for now. Until Max is safe and Vecna is gone. And even though she knows this is what she must do, repress, repress, repress, because her life was at stake, Max's life was at stake, she still felt a weight of sadness pulling her under. She felt herself fading away, losing herself in the labyrinth of her mind as they all stood together in a small circle around Eddie, who was crouched below the massive form of Skull Rock. She felt as if the rocks were on her shoulders and her feet were sinking themselves into the ground.
She heard fingers snapping, but it felt as if her ears were stuffed with cotton. Her vision was blurry, but she could see the same fingers, with short maroon colored nails snapping before her eyes.
"Ruby!" The voice became clearer, and suddenly she's back in reality. Robin calling her name repeatedly, her fingers not stopping their movements.
"Yeah, sorry." Ruby ran a hand down her face, clearing her throat from the sudden ball that formed itself there. "I zoned out there for a second."
