John Winchester answered his phone with annoyance as it rang for the third time. He was about to start a hunt with his son Dean. Dean was only 17 at the time and John had a lot to teach the kid.

"Hello?" John said annoyed into the phone.

"Is this a John Winchester?" A little girl said, sounding scared.

"Listen, kid, I don't have time to deal with this," John said about to hang up.

"My mom said to call you if I was ever in trouble." The girl said frantically.

John listened a bit longer, "Who's your mom kid?"

"Katherine Skipper," the girl said softly.

John's eyebrow raised, Katherine didn't have a kid five years ago when he met her in a bar. John then had a thought, Did he wear a condom that night? He couldn't remember as he had been very drunk that night.

"I remember your mom, why are you in danger?" John asked now wondering if this was his kid.

"My mom is crazy. She stuck a black liquid in my arm, spoke in a funny language, and I overheard her talking about giving me away to a strange man. The man had funny eyes." The girl explained.

"Funny eyes how?" John asked, getting interested.

"They were yellow," the girl said quietly.

John quickly turned to Dean "get in the car, we have a new hunt." John said before turning his attention back to the girl on the phone. "Where are you, kid?"

"Hiding in the forest behind our house. The Tillamook Forest." The girl said.

John got in the driver's seat of the car, "stay hiding, me and my son Dean will come to get you, what's your name kid?"

"Ruby, how long will you be Mr. John?" Ruby asked quietly.

"We aren't too far away Ruby, give us 30 minutes kid," John said before hanging up.

The Impala pulled to a stop at a trailhead. John got out of the car and opened the trunk. Dean got out as well, both gearing up.

"Dean, I'm trusting you to find the little girl named Ruby. She's being chased by something nasty. Find her and bring her back here." John ordered his son.

"Yes Sir," Dean responded.

John and Dean went into the forest, splitting up. Dean searched the forest, his flashlight illuminating the dark forest. He saw something move behind a tree. He got closer and saw a four-year-old girl with crimson red hair.

"Ruby?" Dean asked the girl as he lowered his gun.

"Are you John or Dean?" She asked, still hiding behind the tree.

"Im Dean Kiddo, come here I'll keep you safe," Dean said, kneeling down.

Ruby ran into Dean's arms and began sobbing. Dean hugged the scared child not knowing how to comfort her. He patted her back awkwardly, noting to himself how scared she must be.

"Ruby? Where are you hiding?" Dean heard a woman call out from not far away.

Ruby got tense and Dean raised his gun, keeping one arm around the terrified child. A woman wearing an old 1800s dress with red hair came into sight. At the sight of her Ruby whimpered, this was enough for Dean.

Dean shot the woman in the leg, quickly picked up Ruby, and began running to the Impala. Once back at the Impala Dean checked the girl over to make sure she wasn't injured. Seeing she was physically alright except for a small bruise on her right arm Dean hugged her again, this time tightly.

"You're safe now Ruby, I'll protect you no matter what, I promise," Dean said as the girl sobbed into his chest.

John heard the gunshot and ran towards it. He found Katherine lying on the ground bleeding from a gunshot to the leg. She was wearing old witch ritual garb.

"So the little brat did call you," Katherine said with a sneer at John.

"Where is the Yellow-eyed man!?" John yelled, pointing his gun at Katherine.

"He left, but don't worry John, he will be coming for our daughter soon," Katherine said, smirking.

"Ruby is mine?" John asked, confirming his suspicions.

"Seems your blood running through her makes her special, he wants her just like he wants Sam. With the powers, I've given her, and the powers he's given Sam." She laughed wickedly. "They will rule this world together, more powerful than anyone else."

John shot Katherine in the chest, she stopped breathing. John turned and walked back to the car, he had to protect Sam. John faltered as he saw Dean with Ruby, he should protect her too.

Looking at the red-haired child he felt angry and looked away. She looked too much like Katherine, he wouldn't be able to raise her at all. She was still his kid despite everything so he couldn't leave her without a home.

"Dean, get in the car," John said getting in the driver's seat.

Dean helped Ruby into the back seat and then got in the passenger seat. "Where's her family?" Dean asked, worried about Ruby.

"You shot her mother, I killed her, she wasn't her mother anymore," John said looking at Ruby through the mirror.

"What about her dad or other family?" Dean asked.

"I'm her dad, she's your sister Dean. But I can't raise her in this life." John said, looking at Dean. "Promise me that you will never tell Sam about her"

"I promise dad," Dean said reluctantly.

John pulled up to a CPS building and took Ruby inside. After an hour he came back out alone and drove away. Dean knew what just happened, and despite feeling uneasy about it he convinced himself it was for the best. Eventually, as the years passed, Dean forgot all about his little sister.
