Chapter Twenty-Six: Holding Back

Kai's POV

I walk into school with a limp as I feel my whole body ready to fall apart, I didn't expect for my body to be that sore after boxing, I've kick boxed with Blaine before but I've never felt this sore, especially in my arms

"Baby I told you fighting my brother was a bad idea, you can barely hold your book bag" Mercedes says as she attempts to take my bag but I stop her

"Baby I'm fine, I will admit that I'm sore as hell but I'll be good"I say and Mercedes sighs as she just holds me close as we walk down the hallway

"Just wish you didn't jeopardize the game today for me" She says and I lean down and kiss her forehead

"Baby don't do that, I chose to do that and it's my fault but I'll be fine so don't blame yourself...plus Ill just play like normal and still get offers so I'll be good as far as my future goes" I say cockily causing Mercedes' to smack my stomach

"Humble yourself a bit Kai" She says and I nod, as we walk I look over and see Breah looking me up and down as her eyes follow us, I look away from her as I roll my eyes

She's been a pain since our previous conversation, now she knows who I'm dating..great

"Baby who was that girl staring at us" I hear Mercedes say causing me to look down at her

"What?...oh her...she's some cheerleader that I met at practice" I say casually

"What's her name and why is she looking at us like that" She says and I sigh

"Shes Breah and she's flirted with me but I told her off, it's fine baby she's just noesy" I say and Mercedes' looks at me like I've lost my mind as we stop in the hallway

"What?" I say confused and Mercedes' rubs her temple in irritation

"Sometimes you think like a boy and it kills me....baby why didn't you tell me she flirted with me" Mercedes says before looking me in my eyes

"I just forgot about it really...I thought since I told her off, it didn't matter" I say and Mercedes' let's out a deep breath

"Just tell me if she flirts with you next time...come on we're almost late for class" She says before pulling me to our class, I just nod wordlessly as I feel bad for not telling her

Time skip

I bounce the ball a bit before shooting and feeling my muscles tighten causing me to hiss in slight pain as the ball goes through the hoop

The soreness hasn't gone away like I hoped and I'm now getting nervous, especially since now my brother is here to watch my game, he played college ball and I look up to him a lot

"Yo....you still mad sore aren't you" I hear Isaiah say beside me as I shoot another three and feel my muscles pulling once again

"Yea....just gotta work through it" I say as I try to move around more and more to loosen up but Isaiah stops me

"Yo chill....you been doin a lot the past few days and that's why Beiste told us to chill...look just try and chill this game and let the team take over" He says and I look at him like he's insane

"Bro what...this is the game that'll have hella scouts, not to mention my brother is here....and you want me to chill this game" I say as I look around and see my brother looking at his phone looking bored

"Trust me, we can't have your body fucked up for the championship game, Carmel is tough enough and you straining your body is gon make it harder...just pass a lot and do some lay ups, that's all I ask" Isaiah says and I suck my teeth knowing he's right

"Fine...but if I'm open for the three I'm attempting, I can't do less than ninety percent if I'm not goin all in" I say and he sighs before nodding, Coach Beiste blows the whistle and we walk over

"Alright guys, we have some tough competition so play your best and show me what I saw in practice this whole week" She says and I nod nervously

We break from the huddle and walk to the floor, I try and hide my limp as best I can as I get into position for the jump ball

I see the guy I'm against laugh but I roll my eyes, how he gon laugh when I'm taller than him

The referee blows the whistle and I jump and grab the ball with ease, i start dribbling the ball down court and look for an open man but don't see one

I sigh before pushing off my foot and driving to the basket and getting the easy lay, I look to Isaiah and he nods and I do the same

I look to the stands and see Mercedes' and my parents smiling at me, I smile back but it falls when I see my brothers face, he has a prominent frown as he watches me closely

I shake the negative out of my head before locking back into the game

I run down court with the ball as I ignore the fiery feeling in my legs, I step like I'm about to drive the basket before stepping back and passing the ball to Isaiah who's carried us this whole game

He makes the three and daps me up as we jog down court, I guard one of the shorter guys as he looks away several times but when he does it again I smack the ball from his hands and dive for it

I grab it and toss it to Puck who runs down court and dunks the ball, he starts acting all hype like he don't got like 5 points tonight

I sigh and get up and prepare to play defense again, I see one guy who's about my height jogging towards me and I immediately get in his personal space as he tries to box me out, he move to go around me and I go to block him but hiss in pain from my arm stretching

He manages to get away from me and I start it get frustrated, I've been playing less than I know I can and I'm tired of it

I gotta heat up

I inbound the ball and jog down court and call for Finn to pass the ball but he looks me off, I sighs and watch him pass to Puck who shoots a three but it clanks off the rim

I immediately jump and dunk it in causing the crowd to go wild, I ignore the feeling in my body but soon I hear a whistle causing me to look over and see that Coach Beiste called a time out

I look to the clock, there's 1:45 left and we're up by one which is good

"Overstreet, bench now don't argue" She says and I look at her shocked and I just nod and sit down on the bench, she starts goin over how to close the game as I sit in the bench confused, the timeout ends and Coach Beiste walks over to me and I can tell she's pissed

"After you get dressed, you and Isaiah come to my office to talk...good effort tonight" She says sternly and I nod before she walks back to the sideline to coach the rest of the game

I sit and watch Isaiah close out the game with a game winner at the buzzer, I jump up excitedly as I run to him and hug him as confetti fans down on us and the team hugs us in celebration

We're heading to the championship babyyy!!!!!
