Chapter 38

Thud!

I could faintly hear a striking sound and wanted to open my eyes to see it but for some reason I couldn't get pry eyes open like they were glued closed. My brain felt like a cantaloupe overflowing with a bunch of slugs that were slowly eating their way through the soft tissue and causing my brain to feel groggy and my skull to pound.

Thud!

I heard it again except this time I could almost swear I felt something too, something stinging on my shoulder.

"Come on, mutt! Wake up!"

SMACK!

Oh, that did not feel good. The whole right side of my face felt like the color red. Not cool.

I tried to concentrate so I wouldn't be slapped again, trying in earnest to open my eyes. Following major renovation of wires around in my brain, I felt my eyes gradually disconnect to reveal blurry images like I woke up in the middle of water.

"Oh, good morning, Alpha-boy. About time you woke up." I saw someone grinning at me. All I could tell from the indistinct image was that it was a guy with blonde hair and some freakishly white teeth. They looked like dentures.

"Are you using dentures?" I questioned without thinking.

Even with the fuzzy vision I could see him now frowning, scowling almost as if he was pissed at what I asked him.

"Just stand up, you stupid mutt." He snarled at me and grabbed me by my shoulders and pulling me upwards quickly. Ugh, now I felt sick. My eye sight had gotten even worse now, my skull was pounding, and I could taste the acid coming up my throat. The blonde dude tugged at my arm, cursing me but that only made it worse. In fact, I think I puked on him.

Ew

Though it was intensely revolting I think it helped because I could feel my eye sight getting better as I slid down the wall. And even if it still seemed a little blurry I realized that could be just because everything in the place looks a like. Every which way I looked all the walls were made out of metal, thick metal with stains all over them and very little amount of light.

I felt someone tug on me as my body slid more towards the ground but before my head met the floor that guy that I puked on grabbed my hands and started pulling me in whichever direction he had wanted me to go.

This didn't seem very safe.

"Come on, you mutt!"

I wanted to take offense to that because somewhere in my mind I knew it wasn't exactly a nice thing to say and was directed at me, but my throat still hurt like the dickens from all that acid coming up so I kept it shut. As he dragged me through what I guessed was just a narrow hall, my head hit the ground multiple times making my eye sight worsen until the world (or hall) was once again a watery blur.

"Hey, Richard, help me pull this fat-ass to the lab, will you?" That guy who had woke me up asked. I heard someone reply before I was dragged even faster through the hall.

"Where are we going?" I questioned groggily, not even being able to see anymore except for one shade of really, really dark gray. "Come on, guys, I wanna know."

"Stop whining!" One of the guys, Richard I'm guessing, barked at me.

"Besides," The other guy (the blonde dude, I think) interrupted. "We're here."

After a few moments of struggling fr me to get my eyes back open, I finally managed to and when my eyes opened I saw I was in another metal room except this one had a bunch of metal tables, trays, and the kind of things we would use in science class to dissect frogs and pig hearts.

"Hey! Are you guys scientist? Are we doing a lab? I always like doing labs. They're so much more fun than book work ..." I looked at the guys next to me whose full focus was the lab in front of us. "Hey, what are you guys looking at?"

The blonde turned his head to look at me, giving me what I could only classify as a smirk as if he just he was the cat that got the cream and watched me fail to even reach the cream. I could feel panic in my chest for some reason and I guess he could tell because that just made him smile even more. "Look at your friend, Emerson, can you hear her?"

As soon as he said that it felt like someone just threw a bunch of rocks at my skull and I suddenly could hear the shrill screams of one person ... one girl. I turned my head towards the noise and it was like someone just stabbed me through the chest.

It was Kriss.

It was dim in the lab but I could still see her silhouette arch up every time ... every what? What was happening? All I could see is her arching up off of the table she was tied down to as ... as blue string wrapped around her?

Shit, that's not string, that was electricity. Bolts of electricty shot through wires and onto her as she screeched and howled in anguish. All the cloudiness in my brain seemed to just scatter and my heart pounded in fear.

"Kriss!" I cried out though I knew it would do no good and that she wouldn't even hear me over her own screams.

"Oh, good, I see he's awake."
