Chapter 6
Jonas Brother : Good :: One Direction : Bad
I had picked up the food from the floor. It was a little shaken but otherwise okay in their paper wrapped selves. I was turned facing her and she was turned facing me so we could use the middle seat in my truck as a table of sorts. I took the food out of the bag and had it set out using the paper sack as a plate. God, I was freaking starving!
I tore into the hamburger like a dying man, probably very messily too. That's why I thought Kriss was starring and for a second I got embaressed. I had mustard on my face, I think and probably a lot of crumbs too.
"What is that?" Kriss pointed to her food.
Is she angry I got a sandwhich or something? "Food?" I asked kind of snottily. What, she gonna get snarky with me?
"It is?" She pokes it and I could tell she was smelling it. Really? Has she never seen a sandwhich before? "It smells good but I never seen anything like it."
She really hasn't seen a sandwhich before? Fuck, I thought she was being saracastic or something. "You can eat it. They taste good."
"It's so ... large." I coughed at her comment, holding back a laugh and a 'that's what she said'. "How do I eat it?"
"You take bites, don't eat it whole."
Her mouth made an 'O' and face brightened as if she understood before she gingerly picked up the sandwhich and took a bite.
Seriously, where is a camera when you need one? Her face? Absolutely a pure Kodak moment. It seems every second I know her, that face of wonderment only got more and more glorious. She looked at the her food as if the essence of happiness and everything good in the world had sex with magic and god and their baby was called fish sandwhich. Yeah, that was the level of amazement she was at. After she starred at the sandwhich for five minutes (like the sandwhich would just get up and walk away) she took the whole thing in her mouth.
"Was it good?" I asked. All I got back was a very vigorious nod. She tried mumbling something but I couldn't understand it. I don't think she could chew all that food and you can't just swallow a sandwhich whole. "You okay?" All I got was her shaking her head very vigoriously back at me. I looked around for a napkin but came up empty. "Here, spit out a part of it into my hand."
With all the elegance and grace in the world, she spit of a puddle of half-chewed food into my open palm. "Well that was ... disgusting. You better?" I asked as I turned and chunked the puddle food out my window.
She nodded again, swallow her remaining food as I wiped my wet palm on my jeans, grimancing.
That truely was disgusting.
We had left soon after that, getting rid of the trash from near by trash bins then driving off. Kriss unfortunely could not put on her seatbelt because it was ripped. But fortunately my home was only a few miles away and there wasn't many cops that passed through around here. It took a total of eleven minutes to get from the parking lot of Wendy's to my house and from the look of it Mom was home and she had picked Evie from soccor already.
"Mom, Evie," I yelled into the house as soon as I walked in with Kriss behind me. "I'm home!"
"Emmie!" A blur launched itself at me and I was barely able to brace myself before Evie hit me full force with a jump hug. "I missed you! Where were you? Where'd you go? I was so worried! Plea-" Suddenly she went still in my arms, not moving an inch. "Who is she?"
Sheepishly, I set her down, turning to find Kriss hiding awkwardly behind my back. "It's okay," I mumbled to her as I pulled her in front of me, putting my hand on her shoulders as she shrunk into me to keep from penatrating the blond's gaze.
"Kriss, this is Evie," I announced gesturing to my younger sister whose eyes had widen in understanding. "Evie, Kriss. She's a friend of mine and will be staying with us for a while."
"Oh, yay!" Evie exclaimed. "A friend, come with me. We'll go to my room and hang out for a while!"
Kriss hesitated, looking at me for comfirmation. I smiled at that, her thinking she needed my judgement for an 'OK'. I nodded at her with a smile and even though I didn't really want her to, I motioned for her to go with Evie. She gave a smile back then both her and Evie ran to her room.
My smile was wide with amusement as I walked into the kitchen. I could see imagine Kriss with her wide eyes and innocent smile. It was kind of (dare I say it) cute. Like a kitten. I chuckled at my own joke even if it wasn't that funny. Cute as a kitten.
"What's got you so happy?" A voice asked and I saw my mom enter the kitchen.
"Oh, nothing." I replied then remembered. "Hey, can Kriss stay over for a while? I don't want her staying at the prison anymore and Sedrick's bugging me. The creep."
"Of course," Mom answered in a 'duh' tone. I knew she'd say yes but I still wanted to do the courtsy of actually asking. "I'm not going to let some poor child stay in a jail cell, Emerson Landon James."
"I know, Mom." I rolled my eyes, grabbing a soda out of the fridge.
"Can you grab me one?" I tossed my mom a soda. "Thanks. So where is this girl, anyways?"
"She and Evie are doing something in her room. Don't know what." I answered. Then I got curious. Why where they doing? Where they talking about me? "I'm going to go check on them."
After climbing the stairs to my sister room I listened in on their converstation. Invading their privacy? Maybe, but I'm the big brother and I have rights to do stuff like that.
"-think that One Direction is a total sham? I mean, boy band?" I heard recognized Evie talking. Not only was she the loudest girl I've ever met but I've heard this rant before. "The Jonas Brothers were way better, right?"
"Um ..." I could just imagine Kriss standing (or sitting) there confused and not having a clue what she's talking about. "I don't know. I've never heard of them excepted in papers. I heard they are good though."
"Oh." Evie said surprized. "Well let me show you the awesomest band ever. I still can't believe Disney just got rid of them or whatever."
Shaking my head, a smile spread over my face. I headed down stairs to hear some shouts from down stairs.
"That was lame!" Someone laughed loudly.
"Your mom is lame!" Someone else shouted back.
"Worst come back ever." A third grumbled.
"Yeah, man, are you in fifth grade?" A forth added.
I turned right at the bottom of the stairs into the living room to see all my friends playing the Xbox.
"Dude, it's Emerson!" The first one, Hunter, yelled obnoxiously.
"Welcome back man." The one who shouted 'your mom' (Drew) welcomed but his gaze didn't turn from the game.
"Finally." Bruce threw a side-grin at me.
"Hey, how come no one was excited about me being back?" The last, Grant, asked before he turned to me. "How's Kriss doin', man? She okay?"
"Yeah," I shrugged. "She's hanging with Evie."
"Is everything alright?" Drew stopped watching the game and everyone was starring at me now.
"Yeah," I repeated. "Just a lot of shit that'll be explained in the meeting tomorrow but the jist of it is that both I and Dr. Todden think the new girl was abused."
Hunter snorted, "I wouldn't put it passed the cats, bunch of asswipes."
Just then we heard a bunch of screaming.
