Both of them were puzzled, confused if it was a dream or it had actually happened. It had felt so real when they touched, the emotions they shared were so raw and electric. They both thought of trying to open their bond to find out if it really happened or if it was all a mirage, but it was as if something was stopping them, like there was some invisible barrier blocking them from reaching one another.
Rey decided there was only one other person she could confide in. She walked to the base where she knew Leia would be. She entered and BB-8 sailed towards her, greeting her with excited beeps whilst he jumped up and down. Rey knelt down to greet him back, running her hand over his head.
When she saw Rey, Leia smiled and walked gracefully over to her. Rey's expression however didn't change, just stayed blank. Leia put her arm around her and the pair walked outside and sat on a log near a forest.
"Something's happened..." Rey said. She put her hand on Leia's and closed her eyes. She explained everything to Leia. The room, the smoke creature, the hug between her and Kylo, even the emotions they shared.
Leia sat silent, a single tear rolling down her cheek.
"I don't even know if it was real." Rey said shakily.
"I think the force works in ways that even we couldn't comprehend." She said. "I think the power of your minds bound together can have a stronger effect than anything. This is something you both will have to figure out on your own. But I am always here when you need me." She continued calmly.
Rey hugged her tight.
"Thank you." She whispered.
Rey trudged back home, feeling like a small weight had been lifted off her chest. She wanted to tell Kylo how there was nothing to worry about, that it was them, maybe even their bond.
She shut her eyes and concentrated on her feelings, focussing her energy on finding him. She reached out to him, her breathing becoming slow and regulated, energy radiating around her.
"Ben." She whispered.
She heard that familiar buzz into silence and he faded into view. She'd never intentionally opened the bond before, she wasn't even sure it was possible to do it of her own accord.
"Ben I spoke to your mother, she explained it all."
A flicker of emotion crossed his face for a split second. Rey couldn't decipher exactly what it was.
"You told my mother?" He said, the soft tones in his voice vanishing.
"I knew that she would be the best person to talk to because she understands this stuff, she understands you." She said also becoming slightly agitated.
"She doesn't understand me, no one does." He spat.
"You know that's not true!" Exclaimed Rey, her cheeks becoming hot with anger. He knew just as well as her that they understood each other more than anybody ever could.
"I shared with you things....things I didn't even mean, I just said them to make you feel better about how you were feeling." Kylo defended.
"So you don't even want to hear what I...she had to say?" Rey asked.
"Go on." Said Ben, taking a step towards her. "Enlighten me." He was getting agitated now.
"Your mother thinks...well she thinks we feel similarly and I agree with her! And I know you do too because we connected, Ben. You know we did. I told her what happened, not what was said but what happened, the smoke, the room and she said it was the force of our minds. She knows we have a bond, Ben and she said we are the same and that's what bought us together. And when you...you know..."
"When i what?" Ben whispered, knowing full well what she was talking about.
"When you...when we were close...that's what set us free. Ben it's the connection, our dyad. We have to work this out together so we can stop it happening." She said quietly.
"Stop it? Rey I know as well as you, you wanted to be trapped in that room with me." He said taking another step towards her.
"You're lying." She said through her teeth.
Ben exhaled through his nose, almost close to a laugh as he shook his head.
"You want to feel close to me because you feel like I'll understand, like I'll show you the way."
"Stop it." She said, shaking.
He was walking around her in circles now. He couldn't possibly be enjoying this, could he?
"You wanted to be in that room with me because you want me to turn, you want me to become even closer to you so you have someone to show you the right path."
"Get out of my head." Her voice was wavering now, partly with fear and partly with anger. She was angry that he had this effect on her, he wanted to get under her skin.
"I know how you feel for me, Rey." He said standing closer to her.
"You're wrong." She said. Then, she snapped and turned to look at him.
"It's you who wanted to be there. Down beneath it all, you're just a frightened, lonely child. The murder of your father, it haunts you, doesn't it?" She said, which made him stop in his tracks. She turned her whole body to face him now "And I think it was you who wanted to be in that room with me because I showed that belief in you that he once had. I know every word of what you said to me was true and you want someone to understand you. I do understand you, Ben and I know there is good in your heart." She said, touching his chest.
He backed away.
"I have nothing to say to you." He said quietly as he turned around and walked away, his surroundings and him both melting away.
"Ben, I'm sorry..." Rey said as she tried to run after him, but it was no use, he had already melted out of view.
She felt so awful about the way she spoke to him. She was just lashing out because she realised what he said to her was true. She did see him as someone who could guide her and part of her did want to be not only in that room with him, but trapped there with him.
He was who he was, a violent murderer and she just had to accept that that's how he was wired.
'There is good in his heart, Ben Solo is in there' she thought to herself.
She'd seen the changes in him, he'd killed Snoke, he'd destroyed his mask. She'd felt the shift in his hues. Kylo Ren was fading away slowly and she felt the light slowly creeping in. She was sure he hated her from the way she'd spoken to him. She knew he was sensitive, especially about vulnerability and his inner feelings. It didn't matter how he felt about her, she told herself. They were enemies. Enemies who were bonded, but only because Snoke brought them together, manipulated them and converged their paths. But why her? She asked herself. She told herself it was because they were equals in the force, but in her heart, she felt it was something more than that.
She thought about the way they connected in that room, she had never felt so close to somebody, so understood by someone. Just their touch radiated electricity.
"Ugh." She said as she shook her head, shaking away the thoughts of him, but she could not take away the rising anger in her. The anger at herself.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. It was Finn.
"Rey we need to talk."
