Trigger warning - miscarriage ⚠️

"Kylo? Kylo what happened?" She asked weakly.

"Is the baby okay?" She said, looking down at her stomach. "Tell me he's okay." She begged.

Kylo sighed.

"He didn't make it." He said quietly, rubbing Rey's arm. "You miscarried."

Kylo sat on her bed and hugged her.

Tears started to stream down Rey's cheeks as she rested her head on Kylo. "No. No that's not possible, I felt him." She sobbed into his shoulder.

"I felt him, I felt our baby, he was there, he was there." She was sobbing hysterically now.

"Shhhhh it's okay. We'll get through this." He said calmly, trying to hold it together for her. He stroked her hair and pulled her closer.

"Lie here with me for a bit?" She asked.

"Budge over then." He said.

She lay facing away from him as she silently shed more tears. He rested his head on her shoulder, kissing her on the head before he did so and wrapping her arms around her. He nestled into her and caressed her arm with his thumb. There were no words to be said, so they just lay in silence together, just their presence being a comfort to each other.

The doctor walked in to check on them, but kylo lifted his head and shook it to tell them that they just needed this time alone. She nodded in response and promptly left. He nestled his head back into her neck. The sound of her crying subtly broke his heart.

After a while, the doctor appeared again and nodded at Kylo to speak to her. Kissing Rey on her head, he got up.

"I just need to discuss some female things with her about options, so I just need a few minutes with her if she's ready" she said.

Kylo nodded. He walked into the room.

"I'm just gonna go get us some water, I'll be right back. The doctor just wants a little chat with you, okay." He said gently.

He exited the room and the doctor sat beside her.

"I can't begin to imagine what you're feeling." Said the doctor. "I just need to discuss a few options with you." She informed.

Rey turned away from her. "Yeah." She said.

"So we can do a few things for you because the child...it's still inside you." She said.

"It? HE is still part of me." She said angrily.

"Okay, he's still inside so there's 3 options for removal. We can let nature take its course and let it come out in its own time, we can give you something to speed up the process or we can do a procedure on you to take him out."

"I don't want a process or a pill or a procedure." She sobbed. "I want my baby back."

The doctor put her hand on Rey.

"I'll give you all the time you need to decide." She said, leaving.

Kylo returned with the water. He handed a cup to Rey who sat up reluctantly. Kylo got onto the hospital bed and lay her in his arms. He kissed her on the forehead again, trying to hide his own sadness for her.

"I guess we'll never know if it really was a boy or a girl." She said sadly.

"It was a boy." Replied Kylo, softly. "I could tell."

Rey decided to have the operation.
Kylo waited for her outside the operating theatre, refusing to sleep until she knew he was okay. They slept together in her small hospital bed until the next morning when she was discharged from the unit.

Kylo helped her to their room and they sat on the bed. She looked over at the cot and mobile they'd set up for their child sadly, with no expression. She walked over to it, ran her finger along the side before leaning down and picking up the teddy bear. She silently walked back, lay on the bed, facing away from Kylo and brought the teddy to her chest.

Kylo comfortingly stroked Rey's hair until she fell asleep clutching the bear.

Rey seemed absent after that. There was no warmth, no emotion to her. Whenever she lay in bed, she usually had the teddy clutched to her chest.

Kylo tried his best, comforting her, bringing her food and water, cuddling her, stroking her hair every night until she fell asleep. She didn't talk much either. Kylo ended up having one sided conversations with her. They both needed time to grieve.

'Maybe a trip away could help take our minds off things' Kylo thought to himself as he stroked Rey's hair again to help her sleep. Ideas and plans filled his mind as he drifted off to sleep.

He knew he'd put them into place the next day. He couldn't leave straight away. He liked to be there when Rey woke up. He could tell that was the worst part of the day for her, waking up to the harsh reality that their child had passed after a night's sleep.

'Tomorrow,' he thought. 'Tomorrow I'll make her smile.'
