I

couldn't stop crying. My eyes were blurring and my chest was tight. Doctors were running around everywhere, trying to help Toni and now me too. Someone held my hand and guided me to a waiting room chair. Even still my body wouldn't stop shaking.

I had already come up with about twelve of the worst possible things that could happen. I couldn't shut my mind off, or slow my breathing or even sit still.

Cee had hit Toni in the head with the biggest beer bottle I'd ever seen in my life. Everything happened so fast. One minute we were walking out the house and the next, blood was splattered all over the rental.

I knew coming here was a bad idea, everytime she comes home something horrible happens.  If I not mental, it's physical. It never fails to mess things up for her.

Five hours had gone by and still I hadn't heard anything from the doctors. Just multiple nurses running around yelling medical terms and codes followed by Toni's room number.

None of her family had shown up either. I would've expected one of them at least. Just as I started to doze off I heard Mrs. B say my name. Her voice sounded like she'd been crying.

"Janet.." She whispers. I forced my tierd eyes open and looked at her as my way of responding.

"Is—is she okay?" She sat down in the empty chair beside me.

Sitting up properly, I shrugged. I couldn't really give her much information because I didn't have any myself.

"I—I don't know. They're trying to help her but—they haven't told me anything." Just as I finished talking more nurses started running past us screaming she's coding again; they went into Toni's room.

Her eyes looked back towards Toni's room and she started crying again. It was awkward to be near her right now, from what Toni's told me I didn't like her much. On top of the fact that she knew about Ciara's behavior and enabled her in more ways than I can count.

"I—I never meant to make her hate me, ya'know." Her voice croaked. I looked at her confused and she kept going.

"It was Michael's I didn't, I never wanted this!"

"Wanted wh—"

"Oh, I'm sure you know by now! I never wanted to give her away to my sister. I didn't think she was disgusting or broken—I wanted to help her, but he wouldn't let me!" My mouth fell open and I was just staring at at Mrs. B.

This was a delicate conversation. One I shouldn't even be hearing right now. My girlfriend's in the E.R and her neglectful mother feels the need to trauma dump at a time like this? How thoughtful.

"Mrs. B I don't think this is the time for—"

"No, please." She grabbed my wrist, I looked into her eyes. They looked just like Toni's, only hers held a lot of guilt and shame.

"She was just a kid when it happened—and, and Mike was supposed to get promoted so he—"

"So he decided to send his daughter away and cover up for his boss?!" I cut her off, her excuses were making me mad. I didn't know the full story but from what I did, nothing she could say would justify it.

"You don't understand! We were broke! Mikes promotion got our girls into good schools!" She defined him.

"No, it got his kids into good schools! All it got Toni was kicked out of the house and a load of trauma. Thank God for your sister, at least the entire family tree isn't idiots." I corrected. Eveylns eyes widened and I scoffed at her.

"You dont know what you're talking about little girl."  Her voice had gone cold and she let go of my wrist, pushing it away.

"I don't?!"

"No, you don't! So shu—"

"You think Toni didn't tell me that she isn't his?! That you cheated and got pregnant right before the wedding? I bet her siblings don't even know, do they?" I taunted her, drawing my face closer to her while keeping my voice low.

I didn't want to bring attention to it.

"That ain't got anything to do with what happened."

"Oh please! You're delusional, you knew he hated Toni from the moment she was born! And you let him run her out of your life and then resented her for hating you both!" This woman needed a reality check and I guess I was the one to give it to her.

"Micheal loves Toni. He's loved her like she was his own from the moment he found out! He forgave me! She is his own!"

"What type of father throws his daughter away for being abused by his boss?!" I asked.

"That didn't happen." Mrs. B deadpanned, almost like the words sent a chill down her back.

"Oh? Did that upset you? Does the guilt come back whenever Toni's abuse comes up? Because it should, you're an awful mother. I don't even know why she still speaks to you." Tears were clouding my vision know. I wasn't even hurt just genuinely upset.

"I'm a hell of a lot better mom then what you had." She bit back.

"And even still I wouldn't pick you over what I did have." I spat. Mrs. B's mouth fell open and she went to slap me, but my reflexes were too fast.

I could see the redness in her face as she went to yell but a doctor stopped her in her tracks.

"Are any of you the girlfriend of Toni Braxton." I cleared my throat and raised my hand. There were a few people in the room.

"Me," I say. He looks at me and his expression shifts a little.

"Can I speak to you in private, ma'am?" I nodded and walked away with him. Evelyn stands up and called for us.

"Uh—excuse me, I'm her mother can't I come too??" She questions. The doctor shifts awkwardly before looking down at his clipboard and clearing his throat.

"I'm sorry ma'am, but Ms. Braxton requested that information only be given to her girlfriend, Janet." He explains before going back to walking with me.

We get to a quieter and more private room and I'm given a seat. Looking at the doctor hopefully, I'm praying I get some good news.

"Please tell me something good." I plead.

"Ms. Jackson, I'm afraid I have only the opposite of that.."
