Fire in the sky

We were in the skies a few minutes later. My knees tightened on Tanwen's side. I held her back from taking the led. Instead I sent out Scott and Flynn. They would try to led us around the kings army. I felt a pain in my chest. They had a whole night to gather around us. Then, another thought struck me. They were up all night, most likely flying in to reach where we were.

Zia's head swung to look at me. It nodded as she caught the train of my thoughts. Yakanaw moved up to my other side as Bran, Baram and their mounts closed up around me. Wics looked back, the eagerness was in his eyes, yet it was dulled slightly. He still feared going against the king's men.

'Don't worry, Dyami is not alone in this fight!' I warned him. He gave me a smile before checking on his Nuare.

'They're coming.' Flynn shot back to us.

'Separate!' I ordered.

Bran led his team off to my left, Baram went right as he stood up on the back of his water dragon, a thin cord around his wrist was tied to the dragons neck. I didn't want to think how easily that could be severed. Zia dove downward pulling the hellfire squad with her. I was pleased to see Callar veering away with her. Tanwen was moving higher. She would be my protection, along with the soul dragons. Zelzada moved to flank the queen as we watched what was happening.

I saw the small dots appear off in the distance. Tanwen flew straight for them. We had to hide our numbers. Baram led his group around the mountains. Zia was barely above the ground. Bran glanced back toward us before he swung up into the clouds. Attroxia spreading out to make himself appear as one of them. They kings men would only see the small army I flew with.

They came closer. Tanwen roared her warning at them. My eyes tried to peer into the rising sun to see just how many there were. I couldn't make it out.

'Bran, can you get behind them? Blend in?' I asked. His reply was a snort as he maneuvered his team.

Then I felt the world tilt as I saw who was leading the army coming for us. Upon his head he wore the helmet of Vangah, it was bestowed on the captain of the guard. Those piercing green eyes flashed over our group, they found mine. I felt him try to enter my head. Did he think I was still the weak boy I had been when he was a knight at the school? I had only been six at that time.

'Nice try, but you won't win this that way, Rin.' I warned him.

'You were such a sweet kid. Glad I get to kill you now!' he spat. I laughed. His eyes flashed with the sunlight. Right, he was a unique kind of fire knight, he could manipulate the sunlight. No wonder he would wait until dawn to attack.

'Dive.' I ordered them all. They obeyed, but soon we were engaged. I had little time to watch over the other squads. Quinn had assisted me in placing the leaders in their roles. I had to have faith in my teams.

'You won't be able to save everyone all of the time.' She had cautioned me before we left. I drew on her strength now.

'Stay alive!' was my last order to the entire unit.

Tanwen roared. Rin held a sword high. The sunlight seemed to come out of it. I closed my eyes. Feeling the dragon beneath me shelter hers with her second lids, I used her eyes to maneuver ourselves around. Flynn came up from under the enemy, I shot ice daggers at the sword, of course this was on Greyson made. How was I to destroy something so beautiful? It pained my heart.

As if he knew I was thinking of him, the polar bear came flying out of the sky. It's roar filling the ears of all around. Many dragons dove to get away from something so odd looking, but not Rin. He had been trained well. Lachan had still been with the school then. The old fighter was good with nerves of steel that he drilled into every knight he taught.
