The four dragons came from the school. Po had led them here. He stood to greet me after I had eaten. Squatting beside me, he handed a piece of candy to each of the girls next to me. With a small smile, they each took it. Zelzada came to watch over them. I walked away to pack up my things.
“How is the school?” I asked.
“We are keeping it safe.” The way he spoke told me that other places weren’t. Shea came into the tent, followed by Greyson.
“The free dragons are being hunted. Many have perished. Several have come to the school looking for protection, others…” He shook his head.
“Captured.” I guessed.
“We believe so.” Po muttered.
“Why haven’t they, or you, asked for my return?” I demanded.
“Zyn, this quest you have embarked on…” Po’s golden eyes took on an intense look. He regarded me in an all too familiar way. Po was always the teacher. I hid my smile.
“… it is far more important than us finding ways to assist some dragons. We have explained to them what you are doing. They have agreed to help.” His grim look said this wasn’t an easy task.
“The leaders?” I guessed.
“Refuse to come near the children. They keep a small band with them off in their element section. They will only talk to Quinn or Olympia.” I felt his hesitation.
“They are waiting for my return.” I guessed. He nodded.
I cinched up the bag. Flipping it to my shoulder, I gazed at them. “What else aren’t you telling me?” I demanded.
“You are still so young…” Po shook his head.
“I know I don’t understand the ways of all the land… I wasn’t raised to become king or a prince. I led a simple life. One that I would love to go back to, but I can’t. I promised to fight for my family. I will free them. That may sound young or naïve to you, but I don’t care. I will bring down the king to right this land.” I didn’t say this with any heat or strong emotion. These were the facts as I saw them. Po sighed out his next breath.
“The border has become thick with fighting. We haven’t gone a day without news. We have sent many of our strongest fighters out to it. Olympia’s armies are wearing thin. The children aren’t ready, even if we do have a few soul riders to help out.” Po said.
“My mother has more resources than you know. I’m sure she has been in touch with our border countries. Vangah isn’t the only one.” Scott’s voice floated in from outside the tent.
“Yes, but father has many…” Ammedidon growled.
“Mostly fire knights. How many of the other elements still fight with him?” I wondered.
“We have been hearing reports of increased rebel activity.” Po stated.
“But with the border fighting, it would be hard for any to cross over.” Shea theorized.
“If we asked, she would come. But she doesn’t know this land.” I thought out loud about the alpha we left behind.
“Well, I had connected to some shifter communities before.” Shea shrugged. “I may be able to find them. If their leaders remember me, we might be able to add forces to the border.” He offered.
“Take whomever you need. If you wish for us to fly you closer…” I was cut off by the raise of his hand.
“No need. We aren’t far from Devonia.” He insisted. I reached out my free hand.
