Dyami stood up. He was tall, yet over this past year, I had become taller than him. His strength was his true weapon. For a moment he stood, alone, before us. He appeared even smaller standing there, gathering what ever he needed to take that first step.
Then, the small boy moved to his side. He nudged the man. Dyami looked down at Wicasa. There was an exchange. I knew it wasn't with words, or even the language of the dragons. This was a deeper bond. They weren't just Nuare's. The weren't just friends. As I watched them, I finally realized, there was nothing I had that would have kept my brother at my side. This was his true strength. He had grown much beside the man.
I watched in total fascination, as Wics transformed. I may have seen it a thousand times, but never had I seen it like this. He was going to battle, beside his Nuare. For once, Dyami saw the earth dragon as his true equal. Wics roared. Dyami leapt to his back. The witch turned to see it
He was still the fast, strong, agile teen she had seen all those years ago. I could almost see her drooling for his strength. If he were to give in, if Dyami was turned against us, I knew we would have a very hard time winning this war.
'Zoran, Knarell be ready.' I thought. I did have a promise to keep after all.
I heard their answering cries. They swooped above us, but I held them back by showing them the children still within the safety of the tree. They flew about, keeping us covered from above. Cordgi licked at his lips. His eyes on the two small beings hidden at the base of the tree.
"Take Neffy, do what you can to save them." I told him.
"I thought you were giving Ammedidon, that role." He whispered back.
"I think you want it more." I smiled.
"I want to fight at your side, but I can't stop..." his words left him as his eyes went back to the children.
His own childhood had been stolen from him. I couldn't even comprehend the anxiety that was rushing through him. I squeezed his hand.
"We will be fighting together!" I vowed. "To save them!" I nodded to the kids.
His green eyes flashed to me. There was a look of wonder in them. He leaned forward, pressing his head to mine. Opening up, he let me feel how happy he was that I said that. Then, he kissed me.
"I love you, Zyn." He whispered.
Dyami was on Wics back. The witch had turned. Her attention was on them. She had a sickly smile on her face. Wics was about to charge, when another Earth dragon came around the witch. The man beside it was tall. He had the same dark eyes as Dyami. His once beautiful black hair was cut scalp short. I recognized him, only from the images in Dyami's mind.
"Detter!" the heartbreaking cry tore from Dyami.
"SHIT!" Ammedidon swore.
"Wics, get him outta here!" I screamed.
Raising up, I felt the dragon inside me roaring. I let it free. Flying over the ground, I kicked the ghostly apparitions back.
The witch hit me with a spell. It burned against my side. I ignored the pain. Now as I saw the man through my soul dragon eye, I could tell, he had only recently joined the witch. I could see where their ties joined to her.
'I can save them, you have to flee!' I informed Dyami.
'I don't run from a fight. Especially one where my pupil thinks he is better than me!' Dyami's strong will radiated between our linked minds.
The shock at seeing his eldest brother, had worn off. He was pissed. This witch didn't know what she had invoked. I almost felt sorry for her. I reached back to the others. They were still hiding, waiting for my go ahead.
