I awoke with a ray of bright sunlight stabbing me in the eye. I couldn't move either of my arms. My chest ached from having them spread so far apart. I smiled down at the two curled into my sides. Neffy snorted as he finished opening the window. The morning breeze smiled fresh. Tanwen's hair ruffled over my chest with it, as Cordgi wiggled to get deeper under the blankets.
"We need to leave soon." Neffy said. He sank into a squat beside me.
"Millie?" I asked. Neffy huffed turning his head from me.
"You made her Nuare break their bond." He muttered.
"No. I gave her a place to run too. She broke the bond for many, many other reasons." Neffy looked back at me.
"Well, the town is no longer friendly to us." He stated. I felt a wave a fear.
Sitting up, I yanked my arms free of the no longer sleeping bodies. I rubbed life back into them as I gazed down at Neffy. His face was a grim line.
"The kings army..."
"Is coming in hard and fast!" Ammedidon burst through the door shouting.
"How far?" I cried as I jumped from my bed.
Before the boy could answer we heard shouts outside. We could hear the rattle of weapons, the clang of armor. They were here. We were surrounded. I was locked in here without them! Greyson and Shea were still at the hospital! I flung my clothes on.
"Neffy, get them out of here. I will buy you time."
"No!" Tanwen argued. She stood with her fists clenched.
"I'm not leaving you behind." She demanded.
"We're surrounded." Baram's voice floated up to us.
I looked around at the few people with me. Tanwen smirked as she stood on the bed. Cordgi tightened his hold on the blanket. All I saw from him was the tussled top of his head above his eye peeking out. I walked over to my boots, slipping my feet into them. Picking up my staff, bag and sword, I looked to Neffy.
"Get all the dragons as high up as you can. Hold for my word." I told him. He smirked.
"Yes sir." He beamed.
"Get up Cordgi!" I chuckled.
Walking downstairs I saw the rest of our party gathered there. They all had their belongings and weapons at the ready. Baram looked at me.
"I sent the ferrets to warn Shea." He said. I nodded.
"Sijel,..." I began.
"We have a cellar. There is a small tunnel. It comes out in the field behind the hospital." Caryan informed us. I nodded.
"Sijel take the shifters, use the tunnel, get to Shea. We will need someone to help Greyson."
'Allow me.' Piper offered.
"We could distract..." Caryan began.
"OPEN UP! WE ARE HERE ON THE KINGS ORDERS!" A booming voice yelled.
"Go talk to them, act like you don't know anything." I smiled.
"Oh give me the easy job!" Caryan giggled. I turned to Piper.
"Go with the shifters. All dragons get to the highest point you can. You're going to have to pick us up. But keep a look out for their dragons!" I warned.
"Zyn, let me go with the dragons." Ammedidon stated.
I looked over at him. He was just a boy. I didn't want him hurt, I didn't want any of the hurt. It wasn't likely that we would all get out of here alive. I did know not all of our people had been able to find housing within the building. Many shifters had chosen to remain outside. I nodded to him.
