Jana Stojanovic- Serbian ancestry; Jana is the shy-looking younger sister of AJ and Kate Stojanovic, who is in the 7th grade and often struggles to fit in with social groups. She tends to be considered homely by her peers due to her overweight appearance, but was encouraged to try out for the cheerleading squad in hopes that it would help build her confidence. Like many of her female peers, she has an interest in boys and spends much of her time pining over celebrities such as Harry Styles. She is a fan of One Direction and enjoys taking selfies of herself to post on social media, hoping to one day become an influencer and have many followers. Jana tends to be relatively passive by nature, and her insecurities often cause her to resent many of her more well-adjusted and attractive female peers, namely Sharidan Tellez-Hodge. She sits with an extended group of girls during her lunch period and participates along her friends in the Pleases and Sparkles club after school. Eager for acceptance, she is shown on one occasion being unwittingly recruited by a religious cult, as well as accepting a mistaken invitation to join her school's Lesbian Alliance. It has also been shown that when she actually gets into a dating position, she forms a mentally unstable grasp onto that person. Jana is often seen with her friends at their slumber parties, gossiping about her classmates and joining them in playing with fortune tellers. She is a member of a board gamers club at her school and is considered to be one of the best players, with no one quite being able to beat her at a match. She carefully paints her miniatures to use them during a game of Feldher which impresses a few of the participants and also seems to use a great amount of strategy. She also hides the fact that she is fan of Pokémon, although she enjoys playing trading card games with the boys after school.
Jana sometimes comes across as having a bit of an ego, as shown when she overestimates her appeal on others and sets her eyes on a popular boy who is considered out of her league. She can potentially do mean-spirited things under the influence of her friends and dislikes standing out in a crowd, preferring to blend into the sidelines. She tends to wear unflattering clothing, such as pants that are too high and floral t-shirts that are considered babyish by some of her associates. She begins to develop more of an interest in makeup by the time she reaches middle school however and often looks up to models in magazines for inspiration. Jana is often treated unfairly and abused by various people, as they tend to disdain her kindness and typically do it behind her back. Even so, she mentions that she had a peaceful and relatively good childhood, without any trauma or complications, and was fairly close to her siblings. While her parents often worked long hours to sustain their 6 children, she spent her free time with her older brother AJ, whom she often played video games with in the living room. She also played with her baby brother Zig and often babysat him when Kate was preoccupied with her students or other pursuits and none of her other siblings were available to watch him. During the 6th grade, Jana got in her first relationship with a boy named Lawson who treated her kindly, often texting her before going to bed or waiting for her outside of school every day, so they could walk together through the hallway while holding hands. She never understood why he chose her, or what he liked about her, but was still happy with him nonetheless, leading her to befriend Kirsten Lundgren and Meygan Duncan during that time. At the age of 11, she went on holiday to the Cayman Islands for eight days and after getting stung by a jellyfish while swimming in the ocean, decided to spend the rest of her holiday sunbathing and drinking virgin piña coladas.
By drinking 48 drinks during these eight days, she gained 20 pounds, causing her to be unable to fit in any of her clothes afterward. Jana's sister Kate tried to find a way to minimize the change by encouraging her to wear multiple layers of sweatshirts, but this proved to be unhelpful. Her boyfriend acted oblivious at first, but ultimately "broke up" with her via a note during the fourth period, although the note wasn't even written by him but by another girl. Aside from the first heartbreak in her life, she also became very timid and self-conscious about her looks and implicitly fantasized about being lovable by watching several romance movies. She eventually started writing fan fiction on Tumblr and quickly became one of the most popular smut writers on the website, getting more than 184,000 notes on her "Larry Stylinson" fan fiction and around 53,000 followers on her blog. Jana suffers from dyslexia, which makes it hard for her to read, causing her to be placed in an IEP, a program usually reserved for students with some form of disorder. She often comes across as aloof to her peers, a common experience for people on the autistic spectrum or with anxiety disorders, and apparently fluctuates between being too quiet or too chatty. Her favorite sport is horseback riding, and she claims that she used to watch the horse races live with her family growing up and always dreamt of owning a stallion of her own. She also begins volunteering at a zoo to work with the penguins and has shown that she has an extensive knowledge when it comes to animals. From a young age, Jana frequently wanted to compete in beauty pageants, but after a news report surfaced about a pageant coach being arrested as a child molester, she was prohibited from entering any pageants.
Despite her initial protests, which involved refusing to eat for a week, she began to realize that she enjoyed "not doing anything" and embraced her lack of desire for a career. She often watched porn to analyze the performers and learn new techniques, although she never gained arousal from doing so. This leads her to get into frequent arguments with her mother, who insisted that she simply enjoy being young and not force herself to try to grow up too fast. Jana tends to show a more humble side to her demeanor at times and can be quite happy when she receives the attention she needs. Moreover, compared to some members of her clique, she is often capable to show warmth and gratitude to people who have helped her before. She is shown to genuinely care about each of her family members and can be loyal toward the people whom have earned her trust. She also had a close relationship with her grandmother, a Serbian woman whom would often bond with while she worked on her French homework in the afternoons. Jana is a fan of streaming services and spends time watching shows on Netflix, namely episodes of Gilmore Girls and the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother. She will often build blanket forts with her best friend Noona, an adoptive girl from India, as they discuss the events of the series and likes to join her in making lists. She sometimes watches Star Wars related content with her older brother and would often play with light sabers with him when she was younger. She also has a large collection of stuffed animals inside her room, whom she talks to and engages in imaginary play with, and her father once got an inflatable bounce house on clearance. Jana is an overweight preteen girl who has long, frizzy dark blonde hair, deep-set blue eyes, and fair, freckled skin, standing at 5 ft. 0 in tall.
She wears glasses and seems to have a slight overbite, and she generally prefers to wear her long hair loose around her face. Her popularity is briefly enhanced when Noona photoshops an image of her, earning her positive reception among her male peers, although she later realizes this newfound acceptance is disingenuous. She begins to work out and eat healthier as she enters adolescence, sacrificing her love of spaghetti on a stick, corn dogs and brisket for sugar snap peas and spinach strawberry salad. Jana remains the same for the majority of her life, although she slims down somewhat by the time she is a junior in high school. The night before she started the ninth grade, her parents had an intense argument at their house that led to their brief separation. Afterwards, she was told by a classmate that her father left because he cheated on her mother, and although she is initially angry, she came to realize that her parents were both flawed and better apart. Although her mother let him visit their children on weekends, her father started spacing out his visits and momentarily stopped visiting entirely, but eventually rekindled his marriage and came back home. Jana later entered a romantic relationship with a Starkey Hirsch over the summer, whom she shared a mutual interest in cars with. She goes on to attend a local community college in the city and begins working as a veterinary technician at a clinic, finding enjoyment in bonding with the animals. She is shown to be living in an apartment after deciding to move to Toronto due to a job opportunity that surfaced for her.
