Fuck.

He looked incredible. I hated to admit it but I could feel myself blush just staring at the man. He sat at a white table clothed table with a candle in the center. A suit that probably cost more than my paycheck itself.

It just hugged every part of him perfectly, which was the point—he probably got it tailored. His eyes identified me, and I made my way to the table. Thank God my mom had yet to arrive.

"Nice dress," Hayes says and I stared down at the black short-sleeved mini dress I stood in. I couldn't tell if he was mocking me or not, but I just smiled.

"Thank you," I say, and he moves the chair for me, and I sit. "You should know the basics about me before my mother arrives, and later, we'll go over more about each other."

"Okay? Like what?" He asks.

"Middle names, favorite foods or songs. Where did you go to college? What are your political standpoints? I might not even want to know. When is your birthday? That's a good one... what's your family like? Who is your best friend–"

"Those are a lot of questions," he says, tilting his glass of Scotch back as he stares at me.

"Those are just the starters, Hayes. If you want this to work, you have to work at it. Your effort matters," he sighs, leaning back into the chair.

"My middle name is Caldecott. I don't love music, but I like steak. I went to Babson College, which prompted me to stay in Massachusetts as my business began to grow. I don't like politics, and my family is complicated. My best friend is Beckham. You'll meet him soon. He can't know about this," he clears his throat promptly after.

"Caldecott is a name?" I tease.

"Don't be a dick, Lily." He grumbles.

"Well, it takes one to know one." As I turn, I clear my throat and smile as I see her enter. She steps towards the hostess, and Hayes stands as she turns to us.

She glanced at him and then at me. She was in a floral dress, her grayish, dirty blonde hair down in curls. "Mom," I say, taking her in for a hug.

"Mom, this is my fiancé Hayes Grant." She smiled at him, shaking his hand.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs.Langford." He offers kindly.

"Oh, please call me Addison." She stares at him and then back at me. "I swear I've seen your face somewhere, " she muses in curiosity. Knowing her, she already cyberstalked him and found her next investment.

"Oh, I'm everywhere and nowhere all at once." He pulls her chair out, and she sits, placing the cloth on her lap and organizing her silverware.

"So you're the man who will be marrying my daughter? I've heard little to nothing about you." She glances over at me, annoyed. "Lily's always been a little secretive about her life, school, and work. But never her love life, so when I heard, I was surprised."
