It happened so quickly, before I could even think. We'd gotten back to the swing of our schedules after Italy and settled with our home in Maine. I'd returned to my work as she did hers.
Her maternity leave snuck up on us and so did the day of her delivery. Her water never broke, it wasn't like the movies as we expected. She consistently joked about it through contractions.
She wanted the dramatics of it, felt it would be more our style. But she was scared, hell so was I but I wasn't even the one having the baby.
It was so real, we were having a baby. We were comfortable watching a movie eating her recent craving of popcorn and m&m's. Then she felt a kick harder than expected, then we found ourselves in a car. Then her in a hospital bed having our child.
She teased them to be my birthday gift as the clock would only strike twelve in a few hours. I was now grateful that we decided to hold off visiting that same cabin til later. She... well, I didn't want to risk her going into labor.
But I couldn't believe it. The time was here and as Lily leans her head against my chest in pain as I hold her against me. Her hand squeezes mine as I wish I could take all of this pain from her. She cursed like a sailor, it was simply the funniest thing. Because who she was cursing at, I didn't know.
But she was taking it like a champ, I couldn't even believe she was doing this. It was a different type of strength and all I could do was support her.
I loved Lilian Langston and I still couldn't comprehend how she was my wife. The woman I once despised for being my chosen wife. I couldn't help but be mad for her.
I know I said the only woman in my life was Lily. But as the doctor says the words and Lily holds our daughter in her hands, I lied. I needed the both of them more than I ever knew.
Her cries break through the room as she's against Lilys chest. She was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen, she might have even looked like moldy cheese. But the cutest moldy cheese.
Lily's eyes looks up at me in amazement, I watched as she just begins to cry as our little girl curls up against her chest. Then I feel it, the warmth of tears on my own face.
"You did it Lils" She pulls me in for a kiss chuckling in between. Our daughter is swaddled up and placed properly in Lily's arms as I hold her against me.
"She's perfect" She whispers.
