I set up the cake and candles as he sat by the fireplace like he had been. Today had been lazy and slow, we were both quite tired and just adjusting.

It's been four hours since we arrived, but honestly, it's been quite peaceful. Just staying in this cabin was like a sanctuary. He wasn't moody, it wasn't cold anymore and Frito was just happy to be in the outdoors rather than in the city.

I lit the candles and covered them with my hand for fear they'd blow out. It was a carvel ice cream cake, Hayes wasn't a cake fan. I could tell at the wedding when he spared a few bites. Then Alisha told me he was more of an ice cream kind of guy when I asked. So I went with a fan favorite.

"Lily?" I walked slowly over from the kitchen causing him to stand.

"Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you" I began to sing with a smile on my face. And instead of the disappointment or discomfort I expected from Hayes, he to smiled.

"Happy birthday dear Hayes, happy birthday to you!" I stepped over and stood in front of him holding the cake "Make a wish!" He looked down at the cake and then at me.

It was almost as if something made him even more happy. He leaned his head down and blew out the candles as I cheered. Then he pulled me down to his lap and in for a kiss "Thank you, baby."

My heart does a jump again and I stand turning to the kitchen table making my way over to it. I place the cake down and Hayes returns with a knife and slices a piece for me and then himself.

"What made you think ice cream cake?"

"I have my sources" I giggle digging my fork into the cake.

"What are our plans?" He questions as he begins to eat his slice.

"Well tomorrow is booked up, I let tonight be a little loose so we can just get used to the place?" I look down at the cake and pick at it and when I glance back up at him, his gaze is still set on me.

"I'll eat the fucking cake" I shoved a bite into my mouth swallowing it with a smile and he laughs.

"It makes me happy when you laugh, you seem like such a sad soul" he rolled his eyes at me.

"Okay, Grandma I'll try and be more delightful" A little bark is heard and Frito does a spin.

"We should take him on a walk after I give you your gift" he looked at me confused.

"Gift?"

"I don't skimp people on birthday gifts I'm not that cheap Hayes" I step away from the table and walk up the creaky stairs to the bedroom.

I reach into my bag and grab a perfectly wrapped gift. I zip up my bag and walk back down to see him patiently waiting, I could tell how tempted he was to use his phone.

"Here" he looked over to me and I handed him the dotted-wrapped gift. He shakes it slightly with no sound to be heard.

"What if it was fragile?"
