A Whole Can Of Worms

Claire walked into the living room, set a cup of yogurt next to Samantha and held onto another.

"Thanks" Samantha said as Claire crashed back into her sofa.

"No problem" She munched from her doughnut "So, what's been going on with this Roberto thing?"

Samantha shrugged "Well, if you've been watching the news, that's basically all the update you need. Roberto isn't holding back"

"Hm" Claire said as she chewed "Any chance you know what's coming next after this whole Nunez thing?"

"Yeah, Roberto wants to start leaking evidence to the press slowly but he wants to find the girls first so that he can do this all at once"

"How's that going? Did you guys manage to find the hideout?"

Samantha sighed "Unfortunately, no. The guy who they told us about was beyond uncooperative. He held unto his tongue until he died from the torture they put him through"

"Damn" Claire said with a sigh, her eyes locked on her doughnut. Samantha noticed Claire's body language then nudged her before she asked.

"You okay?"

"No, yeah. I'm just hoping that Adkins won't clap back. Because if he does...this whole thing might become worse than it already is"

"Really?" Samantha asked and Claire nodded.

"I didn't work for him directly, but I still have an idea of how he operated. And unless, Roberto strikes hard and strikes well, placing him in a position were he has no advantage, it'll suck for everyone involved if Adkins does come back at us"

Samantha stared at Claire and watched as she chewed frantically before she looked down to her burger with a churn in her stomach.

"Then, let's hope he doesn't"

Claire chuckled with a nod "Let's hope so" She said then downed the doughnut in her hand. Just as she chewed, a realization dawned upon her which caused her to pause then turn to Samantha.

"Do you by chance know why Roberto suddenly got pissed off?" Claire asked which made Samantha sigh.

"Yeah, Daniel told me. Apparently Roberto's younger sister was trafficked and abused to death, so, stuff like that triggers him"

"Oh" Claire said, a sad feeling washing over her "That's sad"

"Yeah" Samantha said then chewed out of her burger.

"But, what does that have to do with him letting me go?" She thought to herself with a sigh.

A small silence grew between the ladies with their chewing being the only sound that enveloped the room. This continued until Samantha spoke.

"Why did you work for him?"

Claire paused mid-chew with an arched eyebrow "Hm?"

"Adkins. Why did you even work for someone like him?" Claire stared at her before she shook her head in negation.

"I don't wanna talk about it"
With another bite from her doughnut the silence returned.

Samantha's eyes studied Claire. She seemed to not camouflage the effect the question had on her as she chewed with her jaw locked.

"Is it because of your partner?" Samantha blurted. She watched as Claire paused mid chew and turned her neck slowly towards her. Claire's eyes were a whirlwind of emotions which held within them, shock, anger, fear, and, disbelief.

"What did you say?" Claire asked in a tone that sent chills down Samantha's spine. She created a bit of distance between themselves and looked away from her gaze.
