Several jeeps swarmed through the gates of Roberto's mansion and parked in an orderly fashion. Once the humming of each engine died out, the doors flew open, and the occupants trooped out.
Claire's eyes danced around the mansion, a small sigh escaped her lips before she stuffed her hands inside her jacket.
En route to the mansion, Claire began to think deep about everything. From the start of the whole operation up until where they were.
It had first started with her having to pay a debt. At first, even she couldn't deny that she had no choice but to do what Roberto required of her, because her non compliance simply equaled death. But then, he had let her go after a while but by that time, a switch in Claire had already been flipped.
A part of her that craved for the adventure, the mystery, the danger, suddenly was lit up by her participation in the whole thing and even though she was in it for the wrong reasons at first, she no longer could stand the thought of not being a part of it.
And, then she was pulled back in. Mostly because Roberto felt the need to protect her due to how important of an asset she was and still could be. But she didn't care about that, she was just happy to be back into the case and go back to actually using her skills to do something.
And then, they were finally able to catch Adkins. They were finally able to destroy his image and take his status away from him. The mission was about to end which meant Claire might no longer be able to feed the fire that burnt within her.
"But that fire doesn't have to die though" She thought to herself during the ride back. As she began to gain clarity on what really continued to be her motivation and spur to continue.
It wasn't the fear of Roberto.
It wasn't even the fear of loosing her life.
It was just her need, her animal desire to feed that part of her that constantly burnt within.
That part that had her continuously get into trouble with several inmates and get into the good graces of the wardens for helping them figure stuff out.
That part that had her rise through the ranks when she was a cop without any issue.
That part of her that was a detective.
Unfortunately after her arrest, she was stripped of any possibility to attain a job relating to anything she would truly want. But now, she actually had the chance to get back at it again.
She had the chance to be able to continuously feed this fire within her.
"But at the expense of working with a criminal?" She thought to herself with a small scoff.
At the end of the day, that was still what he was.
A criminal.
Despite all he had done, it was merely just part of an operation that dealt with him getting back at someone who did him wrong.
If Adkins never stole from him, the girls would probably have remained in the apartment and the world would probably still be completely unaware of all they were going through.
Samantha would've probably gone down a rabbit hole of depression and despair because she wouldn't have ever found out the truth.
And Claire wouldn't have had to face this internal strife and would probably have continued working her boring job while also bonding with Miranda and Gregory.
But things happened differently, so thinking of what "could've" did not matter.
With a tug to her shoulder, Claire jerked back to reality and turned to find Daniel's eyes on her. She stared at him almost like she couldn't recognize who he was which caused him to arch an eyebrow.
