Claire stepped into her apartment then shut the door. With her back on the door, she slid down to the ground and sighed.
She was exhausted.
Cat poked his head from behind Claire's sofa then ran when he found her seated in front of the door. He leaped unto her which caused a smile to form on her face as she began to tenderly caress the feline.
"How are you, buddy? Missed me?" He meowed in response. Claire smiled then placed him on her belly while she continued to rub his head gently. He soaked into the comfort of her touch and purred in satisfaction as he rested further into her.
"Sorry I left you all alone, I was really busy" She said and he purred louder. She shut her eyes close then rested her head on the door with a groan as her mind raced back to Roberto's office.
"Who is this?" Claire recalled Roberto asking, his finger pointed at Adrian who stood scruffily in the center of both ladies sent to interrogate him.
"This is the man we saw in the footage" Sasha responded.
"And, why is he here?" Roberto asked before he tossed a peanut into his mouth.
"He knows stuff, a lot of stuff" Sasha said then Roberto paused his chewing. He looked over to Adrian then Claire.
"How much stuff?"
"A decent amount of information" Claire added then took his phone out of her pocket. She tapped it a bunch of times, walked over to Roberto, then handed the phone to him. His eyes read through the chats and after, a small smile formed on his face.
"Bueno, muy bueno" Roberto said "This is good" He shook the phone while he nodded "This is good. But, it's not enough"
"What more do we need?" Claire asked.
"Anyone can photoshop a chat, Miss Williams and even though this isn't photoshopped, if information this little gets into the wrong hands, then we'll be back at square one" He said and Claire stared silently at him.
"I need a lot of evidence, a lot. Evidence that once it comes to light, every single business partner, associate, security personnel, friend, ally, and even, family member of Adkins will disassociate themselves from him. They will want nothing to do with him and those that want to help or would normally help him, would put themselves under the water to keep their reputations safe. Because at the end of the day, we're all humans who care about what we have built"
Despite the thoughts that tried to claw their way out of Claudia's minds and into her mouth to completely disagree or disregard Roberto's idea. He did seem to have a good point.
No, he did have a good point.
Claire nodded "Understood"
"But, this..." Roberto shook the phone "This is a considerably good amount of progress and I'm more than satisfied with how your escapade turned out. Good job, to the both of you" He grinned and Sasha bowed at him.
"You're welcome" She said.
"Yeah, sure" Claire said and Roberto smiled.
"Well, since that's all, you guys are free to leave. I'll take care of-" He pointed at Adrian who swallowed.
"A-Adrian, sir"
He chuckled "Sir is a big word, Mi Amigo. I'm not that old. But I will take care of you, from now on and until we get this entire case solved, Mi casa is Su casa, yeah?"
He nodded "T-Thank you"
Roberto nodded with a smile then looked at the ladies "You chica's on the other hand have been relieved of duty till further notice. So, enjoy your free time, alright?"
"Thank you" Sasha said.
"Hm" Claire muttered before she turned and dashed for the exit.
On her way home, Claire wondered why Amanda's sister hadn't been in the picture for a while.
Even as she sat, completely exhausted on the floor, she still wondered why Samantha had suddenly disappeared.
"Probably spending her money" Claire muttered to herself as she recalled the gift handed over to her by Adkins.
That could be true, it was possible that Samantha was on a spree, clawing through hundreds of thousands of dollars. But, that answer didn't seem to satisfy Claire's curiosity.
In fact, that seemed to make it bother her even more because if that was what was really happening, then she needed a decent beating.
But was that really the reason behind her absence?
Claire yawned loudly, cracking through the stillness that surrounded the room. She looked down to her feline friend and found that he had already took one step ahead of her into la-la land.
She smiled "Great call. I should get some sleep too" She scooped cat into her arms and led him inside the room. He fussed a bit when his body made contact with the bed but he quickly adapted and continued to sleep. Claire slipped out of her jacket, tossed it on the ground, then collapsed on her bed with her eyes to the ceiling as nothing but questions concerning Samantha's absence filled her head.
"Why do I even care at all?" She muttered to herself before she turned to her side then shut her eyes close, fighting hard against the thoughts which seemed to crave her consciousness. But despite how worthy of an opponent her own mind was against her, she over came and found herself in a deep slumber not too long after.
