Once we got back to the resort, I didn't go with everyone inside and walked out to the beach. I sat down in the sand and let the waves lap my feet once I took my shoes off. I pulled my knees to my chest, rested my chin on them and sighed.
"You should get some sleep." I heard a voice say behind me and I saw Ari come walking up.
"Adrenaline. I used to come out here when I was running the missions. I need to decompress." I said.
"Always alone?" Ari asked.
"Sammy used to come with me sometimes. Now he is probably in there jacking off to a picture of my sister." I said.
"Hey! Woah! Gross!" Ari said and we both laughed. I looked over my shoulder back to the resort and saw all the guest rooms.
"Is this really going to work Ari? The way we are doing this, putting civilians in danger?" I asked.
"They arent in danger Jo, it's not like we bring the refugees here and if they come looking they will see we are just a diving resort." Ari said and I sighed.
"Yeah, I guess." I said with a sigh. I then nudged Ari's shoulder.
"Hey, the mission went great tonight." I said and Ari nodded nudging me back.
"You being there really helped. Truly." Ari said and I smiled. I looked out to the water.
"You know mostly about me, my life, my story. Tell me something about you." I said.
Ari thought for a minute and sighed.
"My mother was on the boat The Exodus."
"Your mother wasn't from America?" I asked and Ari shook his head.
"No, my real mother was from Israel. The soldiers took my father so my mother got on the ship with the other survivors and set away with nothing, just the clothes on her back and a little four-year-old boy. They sailed for weeks, finally reaching the promise land. Then the Brits didn't let them in, they turned them all away. A Young British officer felt sorry for her. Agreed to hide me, so she gave me up." Ari said and I shook my head.
"No, she saved you Ari." I said. He gave me a small smirk.
Ari continued with the story. "British officer met an American volunteer and we moved to New York when I was seven. New parents, new life. Moved back to Israel the day I turned eighteen." Ari said and I sighed.
"Well I can no longer sob about my life. I think you win." I said and Ari laughed as I chuckled.
"So if you hadn't gotten shot and been able to leave with the boats when the team did. Would you and Sammy have been married by now?" Ari asked and I groaned.
"I don't know. I would like to think yes, or almost ready to be but I honestly don't know." I said as Ari lit a cigarette. He offered it to me, and I shook my head. "I should have seen this coming with him and my sister honestly. I mean they were always making eyes at each other, and it wouldn't surprise me if they slept together while we were together. I will let them have each other. No one will want me anyways after being here for so long." I said.
"Why do you say that?" Ari asked and I shrugged.
"Ari, this is the most people I have been around in a while. This is a lot for me, why I like being alone or with you or one a few people. I don't know if I can be in big crowds anymore in a normal life setting." I said and Ari sighed.
"I get that. We can all help you once we get back home. I promise you I will help you." Ari said and I smiled.
"So what kind of family do you have back home?" I asked and Ari sighed.
"an ex-wife and daughter." Ari said and I half nodded.
"And you came here having a kid knowing the risks?" I asked and he nodded.
"Her mother has pretty much alienated her from me anyway, she doesn't even know me." Ari said and I sighed. I reached over and took his hand and gave it a squeeze.
"No matter what I'm sure your an amazing dad." I said and Ari smiled. He then saw the bracelet on my wrist.
"From the kids mom." I said and Ari smiled.
"He really connected with you." Ari said and I sighed.
"Yeah...he did." I said as my eyes filled with tears.
"Jo?" Ari asked.
"Okay so when I was shot and left for dead, there was something else going on that no one else knew. Reason I was happy to be going home and shouldn't have used myself as bait..." I said and Ari just looked at me and then shook his head knowing.
"Were you...?"
"I was pregnant. Very early like 2 months but yeah. It was Sammy's and he didn't even know. We had been here for months, it happened here and then we were going to go home. Everything was going to be amazing but then thought about others before myself and lost the baby with the stress and everything." I explained and Ari sighed.
"You need to tell Sammy." Ari said and I shrugged.
"No point in it now." I said and Ari groaned.
"You should Jo." Ari said.
"Ari let him live his life with my sister. I tell him this he will think it's a sign. I don't want to be with him anymore Ari. Let him live his life." I said.
"And what about you?" Ari asked.
"I will live mine, wherever it leads." I said and Ari nodded. I then took the cigarette from him and took a hit from it and he laughed.
"I thought you said no." Ari said and I shrugged handing it back.
"It's been awhile. Had to make sure I still hated it." I said. Ari laughed.
"And?" Ari asked.
"Yep still hate it." I said and he laughed.
We sat in silence as he smoked his cigarette and once it was done he stood up.
"Ready to go back in?" Ari asked and I nodded as he helped me up. We started walking back and my leg gave out of my so Ari linked my arm in his. We walked into the resort and he walked me to my room, his was next to mine.
"Good night Ari." I said and he smiled.
"Good night Jo. The mission was a success. We got this right?" Ari asked and I nodded.
"We got this." I said and Ari smiled. He leaned in and gave me a hug. I felt him relax in my embrace and then he kissed my cheek.
"Thanks for the talk tonight too. It really helped." Ari said and I smiled with a nod.
"No problem. Same goes for you." I said and Ari smiled.
"Good night Jo." Ari said and walked into his room and shut the door. I walked into my room and groaned.
What was this feeling a felt? My stomach flipped whenever I talked to Ari or got to spend time with him. This could not be happening.
