I woke up a few days later lying in a room I was unsure of where I was until I heard the beeping of the monitors and noticed I had IV's, and everything hooked up to me.
"No! No! No!" I said upset and I tried to rip everything out but quickly there were hands holding me down and I looked to see my dad standing on one side of me and Ethan on the other. I looked at them both and stopped.
"Dad?!" I asked.
"Hey baby girl." He said and I wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him. I didn't want to let go as my eyes filled with tears. Once we let go I looked at Ethan and he smiled.
"It's good to see you." Ethan said and shook my hand.
"Where's am I?" I asked.
"You don't remember anything?" Ethan asked and I sighed.
"Not much from the last couple of days. Last thing I really remember is my fever spiking and feeling super tired. Things are hazy since I was in and out after that." I said, Ethan sighed looked at Ike and then sighed.
"You had a massive infection in your leg from your previous gun shit wound, there was more damage than you would have ever known. There were bone fragments that had chipped away and were festering. We are thinking with doing a lot of work and getting things around the resort worked on it just started to get inflamed and more infected." Ike started to explain, and I looked at the blanket covering my lap and pulled it back seeing I still had my leg, but it was all bandaged up.
"So once you got stateside there was surgery scheduled and everything is getting better now." Ethan said and I sighed looking around the room.
"Where is Ari?" I asked.
"Ari? Ari didn't come with you Jo." Ethan said and I just looked at him slightly in shock. I was always under the assumption that if one of us went home, the other would was well.
"Okay well then I need to get back..." I said and started to get up again and they both stopped me.
"Jo, please, stop. You need to rest. Why the sudden need to get back to the mission?" Ike asked.
"It's not just the mission dad! There's...someone." I said. I then looked down at my left hand and noticed I still had the wedding band on my finger. Ike and Ethan seemed to notice to.
"Are you engaged?" Ike asked and I sighed.
"It's complicated, especially now..." I said. Ethan just looked at me.
"Married for the mission, right? Not really married..." Ethan asked, and I groaned.
"Married for the mission, dating in real life. We were getting serious." I said.
"So, you and Sammy...?" I heard someone say from the door and I looked to see Kelsie standing there.
"Sammy is still yours. I think you two should talk though when he gets back." I said Kelsie just looked at me.
"Why?! What did you do?!" Kelsie yelled.
"I didn't do anything! You have a lot of time to think on these missions and I think Sammy has done some thinking." I said and Kelsie groaned. She went to say something until Ike gave her a pointed look and she stopped. Ethan looked at Ike and he nodded.
"This was found in the bottom on your bag, it's from Ari." Ethan said handing me a letter from the inside pocket of his suit jacket. I snatched it from him and opened it.
-Jo,
I know you won't be happy when you get this letter. I love you Jo and I just want you to know I did really contemplate coming with you when I knew I was going to have to send you home, but the mission isn't complete. We are close, I can feel it, but I just need to finish this. For me and mostly for you. Jo, you made so many sacrifices for this mission and cause. I just want to finish it for you.
I hope one day you can forgive me, and I pray that you will be there for me when I get home. You are my life Jo, I want to marry you when I get back which is why I'm leaving that ring on your finger. It's always been you Jo, I didn't know that until I met you, but it's always been you.
I will see you soon love, so soon.
Love,
Your pretend husband Ari-
I smiled as I folded the letter and put it back in the envelope.
"He said he feels like the mission is almost complete. I don't exactly remember the last count we had of was Kebede guessed what was left but it has to be close to an end." I said and Ethan nodded. I looked at Ike and Kelsie.
"Can you guys give Ethan and I minute?" I asked and they nodded and walked out. Ethan sat in a chair and faced me. "What really happened to me? Dad won't tell me and the doctors have probably been told by him to sugarcoat it. Ethan sighed.
"Well when you got on the boat, we were told by that doctor the leg was most likely going to have to come off, it was getting too bad. Once we got you to the hospital, though the surgeon said he wanted to get in there and figure out the damage. He was always about saving as much as he could. That was when he found the bone fragments embedded in the tissue, nerves and blood vessels. After removing everything and getting the tension out of the leg it just drained. The bad blood, the infection, everything." Ethan explained and I sighed.
"I never expected it to get that bad. I'm sorry I failed the mission, Ethan." I said and he shook his head taking my hand.
"You didn't fail anything Jordan, you sacrificed for you mission. You did what you needed to do plus some extra. You completed the mission." Ethan said and I smiled. He then pointed to the letter from Ari.
"For security reasons I had to read the letter from him first...so you and Ari are really an item?" Ethan asked and I nodded.
"We are, it's so much different than it ever was with Sammy." I said and Ethan smiled.
"Well good, I'm happy you both found happiness." Ethan said. Ethan than sighed.
"What is it?" I asked.
"I must admit being here waiting for you to wake up, I have ulterior motives." Ethan said.
"Which are?" I asked. Ethan just smiled at me.
