just from the look on clint's face i knew we couldn't get her back even with the stones. she was gone. she was truly gone. there would be no more peanut butter sandwiches or being drug into avengers meetings. no more hugs or reassuring words. just a bare room that held her memory.
how many more of us would fall?
i don't know when i stood up from the carpeted floor. i don't know if it had been minutes or hours but i found myself opening the blinds to her window allowing the light to pour into the dim room. below i could see the rest of the team sulking by the lake behind the compound.steve had a protective arm around juno as she hugged him close to her. thor and tony were shouting. then bruce threw a bench over into the woods across the water. i stepped away soon after that. i turned as a glimmer caught in the corner of my eye. her closet door was cracked open slightly and the color of a red ribbon could be seen inside. it sat on top of a black box neatly and against my better judgment, i stepped forward curious as to what it was. i cracked the door open more with shakey hands to find the rectangular box sitting on the floor of her closet innocently. a small card on top is what caught my attention more.
for juno,
then it hit me, it was her birthday present. her birthday was coming up in a few months and i guess natasha had gotten her something in advance as she always had. i flipped the card over to read her neat handwriting again.
i thought it was time you get to be a hero too.
p.s don't let your mom kill me for this
- love, aunt nat nat
i opened the box carefully curious as to what she had meant. past the red tissue paper was a folded black and gold suit similar to my own. my breath hitched in my throat at the sight of it and the box slipped from my fingers back to the floor. she had talked to me about it a year ago, she wanted to know how i felt about juno going out there with us. i had shot it down then, claiming she was too young but all nat saw was my fear. she knew how it all had turned out for me. she knew i didn't want the same for her too.
