Chapter 7 Growing Up Fast!

That's amazing said Sharon that we all had girls. At least you will rest now, said Nick knowing Gwen is okay and everything went well. You must be exhausted too. You've been up twenty-four hours said Sharon. I think it's pure adrenalin that's kept me going, said Nick. Let me call the nurse in, and get the girls taken to the nursery for a while, so you can get some rest. Might as well make the most of it while we are here. You're so right said Sharon. After the girls got collected, Nick shut the blinds down in the room. He then got Sharon comfortable, before he laid down on the sofa in the room. They both didn't take long to nod off. It was four hours later when they woke up! That did me the world of good said, Nick. How about you? He looked at Sharon still asleep. He then sneaked out of the room, in search of coffee for the both of them. One of the auxiliary nurses, found two clean mugs to make him some. He then crept back into the room. Sharon was missing from the bed! Then the singing started coming from the restroom. He called out to her, asking if she was okay. Yes, I'm being helped to have a freshen up and get my hair washed was the reply. 

Okay, well I got you some coffee said Nick. Can I have it in here said Sharon. A hand reached out from behind the door, and Nick placed the coffee into it. Thank you said Sharon. I'm going to be a while, said Sharon So why don't you go and check on our girls in the nursery? Err alright, if you're sure you're okay? said, Nick. I'm in fine capable hands said Sharon. Also, I've been told someone is coming in to tidy the room and put clean sheets on the bed. I know when I'm not wanted said Nick laughing. I'll see you in a bit then. Bring the girls back with you shouted Sharon from behind the door. Will do said Nick as he left, in search of the hospital nursery. He asked at the nurse's station, and they pointed him in the right direction. When he got there, they were just starting the morning feeds. One of the nurses waved him in. Mr. Newman, would you like to feed your daughters? Err, I thought my wife was breastfeeding. said Nick a little confused. She is, but she has to get into the swing of that. So we make up bottles, with the milk she has expressed in the meantime so that we can feed the babies. I see, said Nick smiling. In that case, it would be wonderful for me to feed my daughters.

You can have Cassie first, seeing as she is wide awake. Nick cooed and arr'd all over her, as he was giving her the feed. Next was Mariah, who literally overnight had grown a tuft of red hair. With the help of one of the nurses, Nick pushed the incubators back along the corridor into the room. When they got there, Sharon was sat up in bed, with her own nightdress on instead of the horrible hospital gown she was put in to give birth. She smelt wonderful thought Nick as he bent down to kiss her. You look lovely and refreshed said Nick. There's nothing better than getting your hair washed and a wash down to perk you up said Sharon. I think you ought to go home, have a shower and something to eat and then come back later. I think you'll feel wonderful too. I can do that said Nick But who's going to look after you and the girls? I'm sure the staff will look after me fine said Sharon. Also, I have to learn how to breastfeed them both. Maybe you will want to be out of the room for that bit? I think I can handle it said Nick I can't leave the room every time you have to do that. Later in the morning, Sharon was tired from trying to learn how to breastfeed, and the girls were full of milk and fast asleep. So Nick decided to grab the opportunity to go home and let Sharon have some well-needed rest.

After he'd had his shower and managed to have a pizza for something to eat. He was ready to return to Sharon and the girls. As he was leaving the house, he noticed that Blake and Gwen's house lights were on. He sent Blake a quick message before he set off. He didn't want to just go over there and turn up on the doorstep. Hi bud, just noticed your house lights are on. Are you home? He was just getting into his car, after waiting for a few minutes for a reply. When his phone started to ring. Hi, did I disturb you? I'm sorry if I did. Not at all said Blake. I just had my hands full, with a dirty diaper. They both laughed. Yeah, I guess our lives have changed a bit since we last saw one another said, Nick. Wow! Yes, haven't they ever said Blake? Are you and Sharon home with the girls? Err, I wish said, Nick. They have to stay in hospital for at least the next four days, I think. Because Sharon had to have a c-section. I've just been home having a shower, a change of clothes, and something to eat. You got back home within twenty-four hours though? Well, Gwen had no problems luck for us, and they said if she wanted to go home she could. I think she thought she would be more comfortable at home. So we arrived home about an hour ago. Do you want to come over? asked Blake. Oh, I would love to, but I'd better get back to Sharon and the girls.
