When they approached the table, they all paused, eyes frozen on my face.
"Who be this babe naw?"
One of them asked.
"Girl, Remi" Esosa firmly corrected.
"And her name is Edwin,"
"Pepper, no be like that naw.
You still dey vex for me?"
Remi cooed, grabbing a chair from the seat Infront of us, and sitting down beside her.
"Remi, seriously, let me be,"
Esosa said firmly, looking genuinely angry.
"'sosa, you know that my guy is a good guy naw, he just dey like say he no get sense.
No vex,"
One of his friends said.
I zoned out on their conversation, allowing my mind to roam for a bit.
I think you're pretty,
Love, Debra.
I smiled looking around the class for Debra and her brother Mike.
I spotted her as she waved at me.
I knew then I wanted to be her best friend forever.
~
"Edwin!"
I snapped back to reality as Beauty nudged me.
"I've been calling you."
She said calmly.
"Are you okay?"
Oba asked me.
I looked down at my food.
Yam and egg sauce, it was delicious and lovely, but now that I remembered Debra, there was no way that I was eating that food anymore.
"I'm fine." I responded in a small voice, my eyes sad.
"What makes you think I'm not?"
I asked.
"You've been silent and we've been calling you. And you stopped eating halfway and your hands were shaking."
Nneka explained.
"Oh," I sighed.
They were all looking at me now and I was getting nervous.
"I'm full, I guess. Thanks guys."
I replied, giving off a fake smile.
Nneka saw right through my smile.
"Do you need to catch some fresh air? I can show you around, I'm done with my food," she said with a warm smile.
I nodded.
"That'll be great. Thank you."
She smiled and took my plate, handing it over to Felix and Remi.
"Animals, feed on the left overs, as usual."
She said and they began to argue on the food.
"Oba, can you help me find someone to wash our plates?"
Nneka asked.
Oba nodded, giving her usual bright smile.
"You're a lifesaver. Thank you," she said before turning to me. "Let's go, Eddie."
~
"Are you okay?" Nneka asked me. "You're obviously not, but I'm asking because you're my friend now and that's what friends do for each other."
"I'm your.... friend?"
I asked skeptically.
She chuckled, throwing her head back in laughter.
"Of course you are. You're cool and natural and really pretty. I'd like you to know that I'm your friend and I want to be there for you."
She responded.
"Um," was all I could mutter.
"Okay."
I said after some time.
Nneka gave me one of her charming smiles, her dimples showing and her eyes lighting up.
"I'm glad we're friends. I hope we can even be best friends."
Nneka said.
I smiled outwardly, but I sighed inwardly.
Best friends.
Just like I and Debra.
