AMANDA"ARE THE RESULTS for Thabang Ncube ready yet?" I asked Diana the laboratory receptionist, my feet taping impatiently on the tiled floor. She sighed eyeing me for a couple of seconds from the rim of her glasses before continuing, furiously typing away on her computer.
"Again, the answer hasn't changed the last five minutes you asked me. I told you I will personally call you as soon as they are in. You don't have to hover." I cut my eyes at her.
" I don't hover."
She gave me the -are- you- really- going- to- do- this- look. I sighed rolling my eyes.
" Okay fine. Maybe I am hovering just the tiniest bit." I showed her my forefinger and thumb, giving her my best smile while doing so. She wasn't having it.
"Go Amanda. For the last time, I'll call you once the results are in. We've been at this for a while now." I stepped away from the desk and headed for the couch in the waiting area.
"I'll just wait here thanks." She shrugged like it didn't really matter where I was as long as I stopped hounding her.
"Suit yourself."
I waited for exactly ten excruciating seconds.
"Do you know what's actually taking them so long? Why don't you call them and ask?" She groaned as I shot up from the couch.
"For the love of God Amanda. We've been over this for the last twenty five minutes. You know how busy they are, in there. So you don't just call them while they're inside! Do you have any idea how many tests they have to do per day from every department?" I partially nodded and shook my head when she gave me a death stare.
"Too many of them. Now just take a seat or go back to doing whatever it is you do. I don't know. Maybe actually treat sick patients and let others focus on their respective jobs!" I threw my arms in the air.
"It's been too long. They should have been done by now. They're working way too slow. Seriously what exactly are they doing in that lab?"
Diana gave me the meanest mum look I have ever seen. That look that your mother gave you as a last warning because you have exhausted all your other warnings. Diana gave me the same look and it worked because she was older and mean looking just like a woman who was around children a lot. I took a step back deliberately. It was just a battle I had no chance of winning.
"Okay fine. I'll sit down and shut my mouth." She smiled not meaning it.
"Thank you." I clamped my mouth shut. For
One
Two
Three seconds
"Okay one last question..."
"Okay now I want you gone as far away from my space as humanly possible!"
**********
"What's really going on between you and our sexy Doctor G?" The waiting was literally driving me crazy. Diane had called my department because in her words, I wouldn't stop harassing her. As if that was on the list of my worries.
