AMANDA

"TELL ME AGAIN why you're going to his house?" I checked myself in the mirror for the hundredth time to make extra sure I was as presentable as possible. Lisa stood in my doorway- her favourite place to spy and hound me- with that strange mum look mothers spotted when they weren't sure whether to be angry or concerned. It made them look utterly conflicted. And terrifying.

"Because we're meeting up with the whole team there to go over Thabang's case." She frowned at me.

"Thabang? Who's Thabang?" Of course she didn't remember. Lisa didn't listen to me when I spoke about my patients half the time. I sighed, stuffing necessary things into my backpack.

"Thabang. Our nine year old patient with a heart outside of his chest. Remember him? He's a special case. I can't go much into detail, doctor- patient confidentiality and whatnot. I've already said too much anyway."

Most of our patients were special but the little boy was more special. He had taken an immediate liking to me and Kyle. We were his two favourite doctors. His words not mine.

"Okay yeah. But why are you meeting at his house? And why are you packing an overnight bag?" She fired at me.

"Because he's our boss and we don't question him when he tells us to come to his house." She snorted.

"Oh yeah. Of course you don't. I mean why in the world wouldn't you listen to your superior." She didn't even mask the sarcasm from dripping in her words.

"Lisa would you just stop. This is about my job and I don't mix my personal life and profession together." I insisted, looking around to make sure I didn't forget anything important.

"Sure. But you didn't answer my question. What's with the overnight bag?" I threw my hands in the air and whirled around to gape at her.

"What's with the million questions Lisa? If you have something specific to ask me, then just ask. I feel like you're dancing around the real issue and that's totally unlike you. It's freaking me out." She narrowed her eyes walking further into my room.

"Okay fine. Are you and Kyle a thing now?" Were we?

Am I and Kyle a thing?

"No. Of course not. What made you say that?" I took the bag to the bathroom, certain I was missing something. As I looked around I caught the stupid smile plastered all over my face. I didn't even know why I was smiling.

"Uh let's see, one, maybe it's because of that stupid grin you have on your face right now. You've had it the whole day. Yeah I noticed. It's as clear as day that something is up and I'll bet all my savings that it has something to do with Kyle. Of course it does. It always is!"

I turned around to stare as her the confusion written all over my face. Her voice had been high like she was annoyed or angry. It was always hard to associate those feelings with Lisa. She wasn't the type to ever get angry or physical, that sort of thing.

"Lisa are you okay? What's going on with you? Is something bothering you." She stood with one hip on the bathroom door. Of course she looked flawless even in sweatpants.

"Nothing is bothering me. I'm just worried about you that's all." I chuckled walking closer to her. She couldn't even maintain eye contact. Another huge red flag.
