Edwin's POV
"And Ed what would you like to be when you get older?" My third grade teacher asked and I didn't have to think. I know what the answer was, I always did.
"I want to be a wife!" I said excitedly and everyone laughed but the teacher looks puzzled.
"Oh Edwin, you can't be a wife, only girls can." She said and it was at that moment that I learned I was wrong.
That I was only ever gonna be a man. That cooking and making a home, cleaning and raising kids wasn't my role.
I'd be like my father. A business man.
When my father died I was twenty three and I was quickly thrust into his positions of co-CEO of his billion dollar company and it was natural for me to excel. The work came easy and I was good at it.
His partner never let me forget how made for business I was. How proud my father would be. And I smiled and agreed while dying inside because even then, even when my company was hitting record numbers I felt like a froud. Even to myself.
Who still would give it all up to be a wife.
I know it's stupid. But this longing is eating me.
I'd give up every million I've earned just to be that. But I know better. I know that it's not my role, not my job. My job is here, in a stuffy office looking at spreadsheets.
The door to my office was opened and I was met with a stern looking Elliot. My business partner. The son of my late dad's business partner. Two years older then me at 30 and quite possibly the only reason I still come here.
Probably to spite him.
He was still off being young when I started here. And when his dad retired a few years later I had already made a name for myself. I was the boss the company looked up to. I was the one they reached out too. And he's been trying unsuccessfully to catch up.
"Working through lunch?" He asks with a frown and I offer him a soft smile.
"The woes of a boss am I right." I say.
We both own about forty percent of the company with the other twenty divided among shareholders. But if there's anyone who's the boss here it would be me. And I know it makes him Seethe.
He then sets his lunch bag on my desk and I frown.
"I'm forcing you to stop working and eat." He says and I smile pushing my keyboard away and grabbing my lunch from my fridge.
"When the hell did you get a mini fridge?" He asks and I smile.
"This month's bonus was nice." I say and he frowns as I set the top half of my lunch into the microwave and the other half on my desk.
He seems to look at my lunch and frown.
"You can't just bring a sandwich like the rest of us." He says and I look at my quite nice lunch.
"It's just last nights dinner. Everything comes in packs of two now adays." I tell him and he frowns taking out what looks like two pieces of bologna separated by a single slice of Kraft cheese.
It makes my stomach turn and I only take the tray from the microwave and hand him both parts.
"Don't worry. Im not hungry anyways." I say and he seems a bit shocked but takes it without another thought.
I smile as he cuts into the baked chicken and the moment he takes a bite his eyes get big and it makes me smile.
He then proceeded to shovel food into his mouth and it gives me butterflies watching him eat my food.
