I love my job. Yet there is no denying it, my job sucks.
Especially days like this.
I arrive in the hospital room and was met by a guy no older then twenty. He looked sickly and I know it's because of the cancer.
He looks over at me and doesn't panic. He doesn't freak out or cry like others his age. He just looks back to the window and the snow that fell.
"My moms supposed to be coming, can I wait for her?" He says softly and I'm not sure if I can fulfill his request. The rule is don't call management, if you don't know the answer is no. But the sadness in his eyes brings something long dead out of me.
"I guess, we can wait." I whisper and he smiles softly. A frail but gentle smile.
"So, what's it like?" He asks me and I smile softly.
"Death is quite beautiful. But some cases are harder then others." I whisper and he smiles.
"Those people who are so sure they're gonna make it. Until they see me. But I'm not as hated as you would think. A lot of people understand that it's their time and come along willingly. My assignments are sickness and old age so they all know in a way." I whisper and he smiles again.
"So you look like how people say. Black cloak and scythe and all." He says and I frown.
"Oh well this appearance is based off your beliefs. If you thought death was a big boob woman on a spoon then that's what would have came to deliver you." I tell him and he smiles again.
"Ok then what do you normally look like." He says and for a moment I think back to my first face, my real face.
"I was just a person, a face you wouldn't have recognized, a person easy to forget." I tell him and he nods.
"Am I gonna go to heaven?" He asks and I smile looking down at his papers.
"Again. The afterlife is based on your beliefs and we both know you don't believe in heaven. So you'll go to a place we call the sanctuary. It's a place where you'll go and live in internal happiness." I tell him and he smiles again very wide and stunning.
"Then I'm ok with that." He says and I smile before taking a seat next to him.
"Suddenly a nurce walks in and hands him a tray of food and he smiles happily at her.
"You're always so happy Jamie." She says and he smiles.
"Yeah, being angry takes too much energy." He says and with that she leaves and he sighs.
"I guess this is my last meal?" He asks showing me the tray of smashed potatoes and what looked like turkey.
"Don't worry. The afterlife has so much to offer in terms of a last meal." I tell him and he smiles.
"Ok what's your favorite form to take?" He asks and I smile.
I stand and suddenly my cloak becomes massive black wings along with a mask.
"This form is significantly more bad ass." I say and he laughs.
"Yeah I think I prefer this one more. I get to see more of your face." He says and it makes me smile a bit too.
"You know, it might sound odd but you're the first person who's talked to me without pity in, I don't know how long." He says and I sigh.
"It's not my job to take pity. It'll only make my job harder." I tell him and he looks down a bit.
"Yeah I guess." He says and I only reach out to touch him before remembering that it would kill his and we were waiting still.
"She should have been here by now?" He says and I only nudge to the phone.
