Chapter 12. Hospital Part 1

As a result of the accident caused by Rachel, Max and Chloe are injured and stuck in the car, but both Rachel's call and the intervention of some bystanders allow the rescue of the two girls, who are promptly admitted to the hospital. Max reports a bursitis in his right elbow, while Chloe a head injury that needed about ten stitches, with both being kept under observation for the rest of the day until the next morning. An hour after the incident, Officer Anderson Barry alerted Joyce about what had happened.

"Hello?"

"Joyce? This is Officer Barry."

"I guess Chloe has been up to her old tricks again."

"I wish that was it Joyce, unfortunately she was involved in a car accident along with Max, but thank goodness they suffered minor injuries. Joyce are you still there?"

"Yes, I'm there, sorry but when I heard 'car accident' I had a flash of what happened with William."

"I see what you mean, in any case when you want you and David can visit them."

"We'll go right away."

"All right, see you later."

Joyce disconnects the call and turns to David who was in the garage at the time.

"David, we need to go to the hospital right away, Chloe and Max were involved in an accident."

"Oh my God, don't tell me..."

"They sustained minor injuries, but I want to make sure everything is okay, let's get the car and go."

"Alright Joyce."

Joyce and David get in the car, and 30 minutes later they reach the hospital, where a doctor tells them to wait before they can go into the room to see the girls, and after another 30 minutes they can see Max and Chloe.

"Oh my God, Max, Chloe, are you okay?" Says Joyce

"Yes mom, we had a bad time but we are fine."

"You can't imagine how happy *sigh* I am to hear that you are okay." Says David hugging Max and Chloe "I was afraid this morning's fight would be the last time we'd ever talk to each other, and I could never forgive myself for that."

"Yo David, I certainly didn't expect you to have this soft side."

"Max, Chloe, I know full well that I have behaved badly toward both you and Rachel, and this incident has opened my eyes to the fact that by behaving this way I have done nothing but drive Chloe away and make you hate me Max.

"David I don't hate you and never will, when I stepped in to defend Rachel I did so because it was meant to be a time of joy and not made up of accusations and arguments. I know very well that you love Joyce and Chloe, but you also need to control yourself and not let your love flow into control."

"You're right Max, I've done everything wrong, but now I want to make up for the way I've behaved recently. I promised Joyce that I would go to a therapist to deal with my traumas and start over, and I will do that by apologizing to you Chloe for being such a terrible father figure.

"Wow, the thing I expected least of all is for you to apologize, all we need is for two moons to appear in the sky and we can say impossible things happen. I accept your apology, and I'm sorry for calling you a fuhrer this morning--and also stepdouche over the years."

"I accept your apology, and can I tell you a secret? *David gets close to Chloe's ear* "After all, stepdouche made me laugh."

"WHAT?!" Says Chloe smiling

"Hey you two what are you confabulating? I wouldn't want you to be gossiping about me." Says Joyce in a wry tone

"No Joyce, I would never do that," says David.

"Yeah Mom, also because if we had to do it we would do it in code." Says Chloe

"Oh, then it's my turn to watch over you two from now on."

Everyone is smiling and enjoying this brief moment of serenity and reconciliation, where David finally lets go with Chloe, and with her slowly accepting David's figure realizing that as tough as he is, he too has suffered as much as she has. Joyce finally after years sees Chloe who is accepting David as a member of the family, and Max is happy to be able to see Chloe smiling together with Joyce and David after all these years, realizing that she has not only done damage, but also helped a family.
