Chapter 6. Abandonment

Rachel's arrival is totally unexpected, and Joyce at that moment lets herself go to a hug, and when Chloe approaches to ask who was at the door, as soon as she sees Rachel, she can't help but run over and hug her, weeping tears of joy seeing that she was well.

"I don't know what to say right now, but I'm glad you're here, Rachel."

"I'm happy too, Chloe, I missed you so much."

"Your clothes are destroyed, and you are soiled, it seems that you came out of a cemetery. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, but now I need to sit down and get my energy back, I feel empty."

Rachel enters the house, and between the look of happiness of Joyce and that of hostility of David, crosses that of Max who approaches her to ask how she is:

"Are you okay?" says Max

"Yes Max, don't worry"

"How do you know my name?"

"Chloe told me about you, but not in a very positive way, and I'm surprised to see you here knowing how you've been acting."

"I already apologized to Chloe for what happened in the past, and in fact I helped her with your research because she was worried about you.

*Joyce intervenes to soften the situation* "Ok girls, we'll postpone the discussions until later, now if you want to make something extra for breakfast, since there is also Rachel?!

"Sure Joyce, thank you" Reply Max

"Of course, Joyce, since we're here, why not allow Rachel to move here indefinitely?!" David answers sarcastically

"David, for once, try not to be so bitter and let your guard down for once."

"No Joyce, I'm not in. This junkie first disappears for six months without leaving any trace and then decides to reappear as if nothing had happened, and then she looks like she's from a horror movie."

"Hello to you too David, I'm really pleased to know that you haven't changed at all in these months, but you've even gotten worse. Why don't you tell your family that you spent most of your time spying on me and accusing me of bringing drugs to school and trying to make me look bad in front of Principal Wells, so that I could get expelled and stay away from Chloe for some fear."

"Let's get personal? Well, then why don't you tell Chloe that you were seeing Frank?

"DAVID NOW ENOUGH" says Joyce "We're not here to fight or anything, but to rejoice that Rachel is safe and sound, while you are ruining everything with your craving for control. Don't say another word."

"Mom's right, shut up for once and stop lying about Rachel!"

"So I'm the liar? I have the evidence on the computer, so we'll see who's bullshitting here."

Rachel gets up from the table

"Sorry, Chloe, I wish we'd met in a better place, but since I have to put up with this third degree, I'd rather leave."

"Good, run away again like you did before, will you go back to that drug dealer Frank or that hipster Jefferson?"

Hearing those words Rachel no longer sees us from anger and hits David splitting his nasal septum, at which point Max knows that Rachel went too far and goes back in time trying to prevent what they saw.

"No Joyce, I'm

..." Max interrupts David

"Stop it David, you should be happy that your daughter's best friend is alive and not kidnapped or worse, but as usual you prevail your wanting to control everything and everyone acting as if you were still at war, just see what you did with Kate. Please leave us alone for once"

"Max is right, stop being a Fuhrer for once."

"You know what? I'm not going to interfere in your affairs anymore, because if one tries to reason with you, you become hysterical. I'm going upstairs, at least I won't have to listen to your little show."

David goes upstairs, while Chloe praises Max for being able to silence David for a good time, but Rachel doesn't seem happy with what happened.

"You didn't have to defend me, I can do it myself."

"Rachel, I did it because I didn't want the situation to get worse, I was afraid that..."

"No matter what you feared, I hate people who meddle in arguments without being asked, learn to keep your mouth shut."

"Don't you think you're overreacting? Max just helped you."

"Don't put yourself there, Chloe. She didn't help me, she wanted to show off as a hero, plus you're defending her when she abandoned you for five years.

"Girls, please, let's be quiet," says Joyce

"No, Joyce, I do not agree in the slightest to be quiet when here sitting there is a little girl who thinks she is a rebel even allowing herself to wear my clothes, who returns after years pretending that nothing happened."

"You've got a nice bronze face saying that, Rachel, you've been missing for six months without a trace, so don't lecture me."

"That individual was right to tell me those things."

"Who are you talking about?"

"It doesn't matter, because the way I see it, I'm obviously just a third wheel between you and Chloe, so I'm out of your hair."

Rachel is leaving, but Chloe blocks her

"After six months of not showing up with my heart pounding, is that how you act the second we see each other? Good friend you are."

"I've been through hell for the past six months, so don't talk about things you don't know, plus I don't feel like ruining the friendship I found between you and that one."

"Do you hear yourself talking?! What made you so doubtful about me? I've been looking for you everywhere, and I've been handing out flyers for months because I wanted to find you with all my might."

"Listen, Rachel, Chloe's honest about what she's saying. I understand that you hate me for making her suffer, and you have every reason to, but don't take it out on Chloe. I want us to have a good relationship, and please tell us what happened to you so we can help you."

Rachel begins to give in, but the words of Dio Brando continue to ring like a bell, putting them in the head more and more doubts.

"I don't need anyone's help, especially you two, and now Chloe moved on since I don't want to stay a second longer."

"Please, I don't want it to end like this."

"Don't make me use force."

"Use it then, because I'm not going anywhere."

Rachel does not repeat it twice and pushes Chloe against the wall, leaving the house more confused and angry than ever.
