Chapter 20. Dark Room

After hanging up the phone, Dio decides to talk to Kate

"I'm sorry that you found yourself in this unpleasant situation, but the fault lies solely with your friend Max, since if she had been more cooperative at this time you could continue drawing your doodles."

"It's not Max's fault, anyone in front of a devil like you would feel disgust."

"For being shyer than she is you can be very brave. You remind me very much of Erina, the woman of my stepbrother Jonathan, from whom I stole the kiss that was meant for him. With you I could even take your virginity..."

*Rachel intervenes by pushing Dio* "NOW YOU'RE GOING BEYOND!"

"Dare to push me one more time and rest assured that the suffering you will endure will be tremendous."

"She does not deserve such treatment. You are abusing your power because you feel untouchable, especially toward an innocent girl."

*Jefferson interjects* "That's what happens when you decide to commune with those worse than your executioner, you are paying the consequences of your revenge dear Rachel."

"Shut up or I'll reopen your wound."

"You have wearied me with this nonsense, at this point I would rather be sunstruck than listen to you another minute. I'm going to sleep, and mind you Rachel, if you do even anything suspicious, I'll kill you and everyone else."

"Clear."

Dio goes to sleep, while Rachel stays to talk to Kate.

"I'm so sorry for what happened to you, you absolutely did not deserve to end up here together with these two."

"Why is Prof. Jefferson also here?"

"He was the one who made me disappear and brought me here, just as he did with you and so many other girls before you. I know it sounds crazy, but Nathan would never have been able to do what he did on his own, because he lacked lucidity."

"I can't believe it, and me confiding in him, looking for support, when he was the one who pushed me to suicide in the first place."

"It was easy for a psychopath like him to beguile us, with his good looks and dialectic, but now he's here bound and helpless as he must have been long ago."

"Rachel, forgive me for what I did to you. I didn't *sigh* want to kill you, I was wrong and you overdosed because of me."

"Nathan, I know very well that you didn't want to kill me, but I can't forgive you for what you did to me and so many other girls. You had a choice, but you preferred to latch on to someone even more toxic than your father and ended up becoming Jefferson's servant. I'm not going to kill you because you don't deserve this end, but I want you to pay for your actions, showing how your daddy's money cannot protect you forever."

"The same goes for me Nathan. I'm sorry for your bad family situation, but what you did is beyond even me. What would Victoria think if she knew that her best friend drugged and kidnapped so many innocent girls?"

*Jefferson interjects* "Well she would find out soon enough, too, since she was next on the list."

Rachel goes to check through the folders, and notices just such an empty folder marked "Victoria." At that point Rachel is blind with rage and hits Jefferson with a series of punches, leaving him a mask of blood. Later, she approaches Nathan and yells at him.

"YOU WANTED TO KIDNAP YOUR BEST FRIEND TO GIVE HER TO JEFFERSON! WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOES THAT?!"

"Please *sigh* stop, I can't take it anymore. Everyone hates me. Don't hit me."

Rachel realizes that by now Nathan is completely disconnected from reality, both because of the medication and the current situation he is experiencing, and in order not to go crazy she decides to leave the bunker.

"Where do you think you're going?"

"Weren't you sleeping? I need some air, because if I stay another five minutes in here I risk going crazy."

"I'm always listening, so even when it looks like I'm sleeping I'm actually listening. You can stay out ten minutes, not a second longer, and don't forget to give me your cell phone, since you might be calling some friends."

"Here! I hope it explodes in your hand."

"You're welcome."

Rachel exits the Dark Room, but she managed to fool Dio by taking Kate's cell phone, and she takes the opportunity to make a call to Frank.

"Hello?"

"Frank, it's Rachel."

"Rachel! Are you okay! I heard about the accident and-"

"I'm fine Frank, now listen to me though because I only have ten minutes and I want to make the most of them. Tonight at 8:00 p.m. you have to report to the dump, and when I send you a signal from your cell phone you have to drive everyone away in your RV except me."

"What do you mean? Why should I leave you there alone?"

"Frank, I have made far too many mistakes in my life. I have been unfair to you, to Max's, and especially to Chloe. I want to make up for my mistakes by stopping Dio so that he will never hurt anyone again."

"You had already talked about this in the RV, is it really as dangerous as you make it out to be?"

"It is and by a lot. Promise me that as soon as you arrive with the RV you won't do anything rash, and keep Pompidou tied up so there's no risk of him getting hurt.

"It will be difficult, but I promise that I will do what you told me. You must promise me, too, though, that you will be careful with that guy, and always keep a few weapons handy."

"I promise, thanks for caring Frank."

"I love you Rachel."

"... I have to go now, I don't want that guy to get suspicious. Bye Frank."
