The first time Y/N left the house after the incident, she wore her favorite cloak — a gift from Caspian — lavender, with silver embroidery stitched into the cuffs.
As soon as she stepped into the bakery, the atmosphere shifted its gaze on her. People paused, heads turned, and gazes bore into her soul when they thought she wasn't looking. One woman grabbed her children and pulled them closer. Nobody said anything — but nobody said hello, either.
Not even Mrs. Weller, who used to pinch her cheeks and sneak her free caramel clusters. Y/N pretended not to notice. She ordered Evangeline's favorite pastry, paid in sprinks, and walked out with a frown.
Later that afternoon, she walked to the Silverthorn Manor — Evangeline's house — to check up on her. It took ten rings of the doorbell and a dozen knocks on the door until someone opened the door. Benjamin Silverthorn.
"Uncle Ben — "
"Don't call me that," he said, face full of contempt and unconcealed disgust. "Why are you here, Miss Crimson?"
"Miss Crimson?" Y/N's eyebrows furrowed as she registered the formality, but didn't comment on it. Instead, she composed herself and forced a smile. "I just . . . I wanted to know if Evangeline's okay."
"No, she's not," Benjamin crossed his arms. "And it's all because of you! What was going through your head, forcing my daughter to go with you to that abandoned house? Not only did you risk yourself in danger, but Evangeline as well."
A scoff left Y/N's lips, and her eyebrows knitted together. "Excuse me? She was the one that — "
Slap!
Evangeline's mother, Caroline Silverthorn, slapped Y/N across the face — causing the girl to stumble back and fall from the porch steps.
"How dare you show your face here!" she berated, glare fixed on Y/N with so much hatred it made the girl flinch. "Come to torment my daughter some more, you insolent child!? Don't you know how much trouble you've caused?"
"What?" Y/N's voice cracked. She glanced up — and, through her bleary vision, saw Evangeline standing behind her father, wearing a conflicted expression and avoiding her gaze.
"Tell them," Y/N begged, looking at Evangeline with a desperate expression. "Tell them the truth, Eve."
Benjamin stepped in front of Evangeline like a bodyguard. "Don't you dare try to talk to her! She's still recovering from what you did."
