There was only one word needed to describe the Great Hall: Hallowe'en.
Hundreds of carved pumpkins floated beneath the enchanted ceiling, suspended at different heights above the four house tables. Their candlelit faces cast a warm orange glow over the room, while smaller lanterns drifted between them, rising and falling now and then. Dark garlands and autumn leaves dressed the walls, and the long tables crowded with far more food than usual.
The feast had expanded into something ridiculous. Platters of roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops, lamb chops, and steak covered the tables, along with several steaming stews and pies. Bowls of roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, mashed potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings scattered the platters. Baked pumpkins and jugs of pumpkin juice sat there as well, followed by enough sweets to make the dessert table look like a confectioner's shop.
Confectionery-filled pumpkins sat beside carrot cakes, sugar cones, bowls of brightly coloured sweets, and trays of lollipops. At least ten students at the Ravenclaw table had one in their hands at the ready, either eating them or waving them around while they talked.
Seraphina looked down at the table full of treats. "Blimey, are they trying to give us diabetes?"
"It's Hallowe'en," Sophie said, grabbing a handful of sugar cones. "Of course there's going to be candy."
Aurora picked up a lollipop and examined the wrapper before glancing toward Y/N. "Do you want one?"
Y/N poked the piece of leftover pie crust around her plate. "No."
Aurora stared at her for a moment, then looked down at the lollipop in her hand. "It's strawberry."
"I don't care."
"You haven't even tried it."
Sophie snorted into her pumpkin juice. "You two have been having this argument for minutes."
Seraphina reached across the table and stole one of the sugar cones from Sophie's pile. "Leave her alone. She clearly has strong opinions about candy."
Around them, the Hall continued to grow louder as more students arrived for the feast. The floating pumpkins drifted overhead, their candlelight flickering across the tables and the polished silverware. Hallowe'en had given the entire school an excuse to forget about lessons, homework, and whatever else they were supposed to be doing.
