"How are you finding London?" Amaryllis asked over a roast dinner and two glasses of mocktails.
Y/N didn't meet her gaze, just kept pushing the food on her plate around. Amaryllis repeated herself, louder this time, but Y/N just shrugged. "Dunno," she said. "Dull and grey, mostly. Is all the food like this here?"
Amaryllis pressed her lips in a tight line, then set her cutlery down. "I know it's a big difference from California — "
"Difference?" Y/N cut her off. "Difference is putting it lightly."
"You'll be spending most of your time at Hogwarts," Amaryllis said. "So it won't matter what London looks like, won't it?"
Y/N scoffed, stabbing her fork into a soggy chip. "Yeah, 'cause being around Brits for seven years of my life sounds so great."
Amaryllis raised an eyebrow. "Hogwarts is the best magical school in the world."
"That's what they said about Ilvermorny."
"Because you didn't let me," Y/N's glare snapped to meet Amaryllis' furrowed gaze. "You hid my letters, in case you've forgotten. You let me rot in California while every other witch and wizard my age was starting school."
"Because you were dangerous," Amaryllis said, her grip tightening on the fork. With a sigh, she loosened it. "Eat your dinner, will you?"
Y/N looked down at her plate and scoffed under her breath. "I'm not hungry."
"You never are."
Y/N pushed her plate away. "Maybe if the food didn't taste like old grease, I'd be."
Amaryllis raised an eyebrow as she set down her cutlery once more. "You barely eat breakfast, and now you won't even eat dinner."
"I'll manage." Y/N stood up from the table and picked up her half-eaten plate. "Also, I'm going outside."
"Why?"
Y/N paused in her step. "Does it matter why?"
