'How...'

You remembered this day.

It was the day you realised that no one would be there for you.

No one could love you.

Not even your parents.

Not even your best friend.

"You're confused. Understandably so."

You whipped around at the voice. There stood the wolf. Surely the voice hadn't come from-

"Akira."

You blinked in a mix of confusion and shock.

"That's my name: Akira."

Nope. It was definitely, undoubtedly the wolf. You took a step backwards.

"You needn't be afraid, y/n," she said.

"How... how am I home? I- I thought I was trapped."

"You aren't home... exactly," she replied. "This is more... of a memory of your home. I needed a safe place to talk, where none could possibly overhear."

"Okay but... did you have to choose this memory?" you exclaimed, gesturing to the arguing 10-year-olds behind you.

"Yes... I see what you mean. But I wanted to remind you that.. one experience with one person does not dictate how all experiences with all people will be. I mean, look at you and Goldie." She finished with a smirk.

"I-I don't see what he has to do with this!" you stuttered, blushing. She chuckled, swishing her tail from side to side.

"My point is, you shouldn't push people away, just because they're people. Some won't make you feel worthless, but you'll never know unless you allow yourself to meet them."

You stared at her, wondering why she was giving you this advice.

"Allow me to formally introduce myself."

Outwardly, the canine looked and sounded calm, but her swiftly wagging tail gave away her true feelings of excitement.

"My name is Akira, as I said before, and-well I guess there isn't really a true name for my species. But, I suppose you humans would call us spirit animals. We are created bound to one singular soul-our counterpart-and we guide and help that soul to the best of our abilities. You are my counterpart. I've been waiting so very long to finally meet you."

The whole thing baffled you.

"Whoa," was all you could think to say.

You couldn't say anything else right now. Then you stopped when you heard crying and sniffling behind you. Turning around, you saw a younger you, sat on the ground with their back against the wall. Their legs were brought up to their chest and their face, eyes streaming with tears, was buried in their knees. You heard muffled sobs.

You remembered this.

You knelt down next to them, looking at their face with a look of sympathy.

You knew exactly how they felt.

You remembered the exact thoughts that were racing through your head.

'I'm useless.'

'No one loves me.'

'No one will ever love me.'

'Why do I even bother?'

'It's not like anyone will miss me when I'm gone.'

"You're not useless," you quietly said. You knew that the 10-year-old couldn't hear you, but you didn't care. You needed to say this.
"Your brain just works differently than other people's. Your mind just treats smaller threats like life-threatening dangers... That's not your fault."

You paused.

"You.. may not feel loved right now.. trust me, I know... but.... you will be. You'll meet someone who, for once, will actually make you feel wanted. Who'll make you feel loved. Even if it doesn't make sense to you why he would... he does. He'll even risk his own life to save you. I could tell he didn't want to let me go... but he still did. He... cares about me..."

"I want to see him..."

Akira brushed your cheek with her muzzle. "I know you do. And you will. But for now, we must return. Your friends will be worried."

Friends.

You had friends.

You liked the sound of that.

Your vision soon went white once more, and you knew that meant you were returning. When you opened your eyes it took a moment before your eyes adjusted, then you saw a pair of concerned eyes looking down at you.

You groaned; your head throbbed. You brought a hand up to your aching skull as you began to sit up.

"Y/n!" Luz shouted in relief.

"Agh!" you complained.

"Oh, sorry," she said, much more quietly.

"What... happened?" you asked.

"Well, there was that wolf, and as soon as you touched its head you both passed out."

"Akira... Akira! Where is she?"

"Akira..? Wait, you mean the wolf? I... I don't know. She got up and ran. I don't know where she is."

You sighed. Maybe it was for the best. It only took you a few moments more to realise that Eda, King, Hooty, and even Lilith were now there.

"How are you doing?" Luz asked.

"Better."

"Come on." She stood up. "Let's get back to the owl house." She offered you a hand.

You hesitated, before accepting it. She pulled you to your feet. She was much stronger, you noticed, than she gave herself credit for. She'd pulled you up with ease.

And with that you walked back towards the house.

"I will always be watching over you, y/n..."

A/N I wrote this almost entirely at school XD (School Chromebook doesn't have emojis)

Also, I'm not sure why but I imagine Akira's voice sounding like the YouTuber Blixemi's voice (she does Warrior Cats videos and songs)

Also also, I got Akira's name from a random Kitsune name generator and it means 'bright/clear'
