Miyuki
I twirled the kunai in my hand, staring blankly at it. Kakashi and Rin were training with Minato, while I sat on the grass, leaning against a log. I couldn't focus, I hadn't been able to since we had returned from Kannabi Bridge. Everywhere I turned, I saw Obito, his body crushed beneath the rock. I didn't even have nightmares anymore, now I just couldn't sleep.
"Miyuki."
Kakashi's voice interrupted my thoughts, causing me to drop the kunai, the blade slicing my hand as it fell.
"Why would you play with a weapon?" He scolded as he immediately held my now bleeding hand.
I didn't respond, I just continued to look at him silently. He had started to cover the eye Obito had gifted him with a headband he had made for himself.
"Are you alright?" Minato asked me as he and Rin walked over.
"You're bleeding!" Rin exclaimed as she instantly sat next to me and began to treat my hand.
I stayed silent, unable to find anything to say. How could they all do it? How could they all move on from Obito as if nothing had happened? I locked eyes with Minato, who's expression gave away his worry. I felt terrible, making both him and Kushina worry but I didn't know how to make them stop.
"There, all better," Rin said, interrupting my thoughts.
I looked down at the hand she had released and noticed that there was barely a scar left over from the injury. I couldn't even thank her as I stood up and started to walk away. I just wanted to be alone. I closed my eyes briefly, feeling the familiar throbbing pain in my head before I ignored it and continued forward. Nothing would bring him back.
Kakashi
I watched as Miyuki walked away. Since we had come back from our mission, she had been silent. It was as if she had become mute. I glanced at Rin who looked at me with concerned eyes.
"Kakashi, go talk to her," she suggested.
I looked at Minato sensei who nodded in agreement and I took off running. I had a hunch as to where she had disappeared to and made my way there quickly. When I saw a hint of blonde hair, I realized I was right. Miyuki was standing in front of the stone where Obito's name had been engraved. I was about to call out to her when I saw someone else approaching her and hid behind a corner. Danzo?
"Miyuki."
I watched as she she turned to look at the approaching man. I flinched when I saw her eyes. They were full of hatred and anger.
"I'm sure you've had some time to think about my offer to join the Root. So, what will your answer be?" He asked her as he continued his approach.
When he had gotten close to her, she took a step back.
"No, I told you I would never join your Root," I heard her respond.
"My dear girl, even the death of your comrade hasn't opened your eyes? I told you, I'm the only one who can help you protect them," Danzo said, reaching out to her.
She slapped his hand away before walking away into the forest. I watched as Danzo's eyes followed her disappearing figure. I quickly got up and went around, trying to catch up to her while avoiding his gaze.
"Hey, Miyuki!" I called as I ran. "Hold on!"
She stopped walking and I could see her shoulders shaking. Was she scared of Danzo? It wasn't until I walked in front of her that I realized she was sobbing quietly.
"Miyuki..." I started.
I grabbed her, pulling her into my embrace. I felt her tears soaking through my clothes and held her tighter.
"He- He's gone," she sobbed. "He's never coming back."
I didn't know how to respond so I stood there, holding her tightly. My heart ached to see her in so much pain.
"He wasn't- he wasn't supposed to die!" She wailed.
"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I'm so sorry that I couldn't save him."
One Week Later
I watched as Miyuki destroyed the training target in front of us, Rin cheering her on. While the team still felt off without Obito, we were all starting to heal. We didn't have time to mourn any longer, we had to prepare to join the ongoing war.
"What's our next mission again?" Miyuki asked, turning to face me.
"To help on the front lines in two days," I responded.
I heard a crack coming from the next training target she had focused her attention on. Since the moment she and I had shared one week ago, she had started to return to her normal self. From what I could tell, she took her anger and grief out during training. I rubbed my arm, remembering the bruise she had left during our practice spar a few days ago.
"How about we all go get some rest?" Rin suggested as Miyuki broke the training target in half.
"I'm not finished yet," Miyuki started until Rin grabbed her arm.
"Yes, you are." She told the girl as she started dragging her away. "Come on Kakashi!"
I stood up to follow them and smiled as Miyuki complained to Rin about how she had interrupted her training. I looked up at the sky, sighing as I thought of Obito. I'll keep my promise to you, Obito, I'll protect them both.
Miyuki
I went to grab my water cup when the side of it cracked, causing me to freeze. That was a bad sign. I glanced out the window and saw that the sun was setting. Was I being too paranoid?
"Mom," I called as she turned from the pot in front of her.
"What is it?" She asked, tilting her head in curiosity.
I wasn't really sure how to answer her and just shook my head. She flashed me a confused face before turning her attention back to dinner. Dad still hadn't returned yet, could it be related to him? I nearly jumped out of my skin when the front door slammed open and Minato rushed in.
"Dad?" I asked.
"Is Rin here?" He asked me quickly.
I noticed that Kakashi was behind him, panic written all over his face.
"No, why?"
Kushina had turned her attention away from dinner to walk over. She also appeared concerned.
"Why do you ask?" She asked both Minato and Kakashi.
Before anyone had a chance to answer, Kakashi took off running. I quickly stood up and started to run after him before dad stopped me.
"Miyuki," He started.
"What?" I asked him. "What's happened to Rin?"
Deep inside, I felt as though I already knew the answer but I needed him to say it, to confirm my worst fear.
"She's missing."
