Jake
It was spring break and Alison's twenty-third birthday. I sat with Jessica at my office, trying to organise my calendar around the events.
Last night, driving back, I had my weekly call with Doctor White regarding Alison's treatment. We discussed my idea of trying to go on a holiday with her again.
Her birthday was an excellent excuse for leaving the city and, if my calendar allowed me, even the country. Doctor White did not object to it but suggested that only we four should travel together this time.
And as much as Mum would get upset about it, I would embrace the lunatic doctor's advice. Alison was better, but I did not want to test the theory so soon, mainly because I desperately needed time off from the intense workflow I was having.
This time, I would not put up with another drama while trying to catch a break, and Mum would have to understand. Norma Stewart could organise dinner at the Manor on our return to celebrate Alison's birthday if she wishes.
Poor Jessica was in front of me, engrossed in her iPad, trying to do her best to help me by moving things around here and there.
"I think I managed it, boss," she said with a big smile, showing my calendar. "I couldn't manage two weeks off as you were hoping for, but a full week plus some days only having to do some video conferences here and there. We can handle it."
I beamed, looking at my new calendar. Jessica was always supportive, moving things around when I started having those full days with the boys before Alison.
I smiled at her. "You are AMAZING, Jessica. Thank you for that! Remind me to increase your next bonus."
She smiled back and turned the page on her notepad, ready to scribble down. "How about her gift? Do you know what you want me to buy this time? Maybe more stuff for her photography course. There are a few new things in the stores. Mrs Stewart might like it."
The necklace Jessica had picked for Alison with the boys' and my initials never left Alison's neck after Valentine's Day. She did not take it off for anything in the world.
I leaned back in my chair and looked at the blue sky outside. "I think I will do it myself this time, Jessica. Don't worry about her birthday present."
I was unsure if it was the excitement about a time off in England or if Alison had grown on me that much, but this time, I wanted to pick something myself.
I gave Jessica her iPad back. "But I need you to organise everything at the Estate in England. We can head to the Cotswolds with the timetable you gave me. The lavender fields are great this time of the year, and I think about them every night."
Those thoughts began when Alison used the scent after showering; it was part of her bedtime routine.
Perhaps I could be her first client and commission the pictures of the lavender fields as a series for my office. All the places Peter had mentioned for them to go together to work on her project were nothing compared to the spring in the English countryside.
