Jake
We had great fun on Halloween. And once again, it was my favourite day of the year. Last year's trick-or-treat was shit because Alison had just been with us for a few days. Her presence annoyed me to the extent that she had ruined a day that I looked forward to as soon as Autumn arrived.
But this year, everything was different. My day was full of laughter, and even Freddie had a costume fitting in with the family.
It was the Martens that hosted the evening party this year for our community. The entire event went with no problems, and Gracie did not ruin my celebrations, as Matt feared.
The same was said for Tommy's birthday. Except for the many presents that had arrived from Gracie, Edward, and Warren. Warren dared to text me, asking if he could bring his daughters to deliver them in person. When I did not bother to text back, they delivered them all to the security booth at the front gate.
But now all the festivities were over, and today was the first day of the hearings. While I got dressed in my all-black suit, Alison stood at the corner of our closet watching me.
"What if she takes the children from you?" Alison's voice was distressed. She too never slept last night.
I walked to her, squeezed her hand, and stared into her eyes. "From us, Alison. They are your children, too."
She swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded. Alison was scared.
"Gracie isn't fit to be a mother. Father will make sure the children stay where they belong." I smiled at her, reassuring everything would be fine. "Here, with us, Alison."
Alison gave me a small smile and asked. "Are you sure that I can't come with you? I think I should."
The last thing I needed was for Alison to put more gasoline into Gracie's fire. "You're with me, darling." I showed her my wrists, revealing the cufflinks she gave me on my birthday. "See?"
"It's best if you stay home minding this kicker." I put my hand on her belly and smiled. "Mum will be here soon to keep you company until I return."
Our house was always better. Gracie was not aware of this place. That was why she put up that show at the Manor. She thought we were living there. The children's emergency contact was from there since they were born, and I never changed it.
I heard my phone, and it was my father. I kissed her forehead. "Now I must go. Father is here."
Alison pulled me back by my arm and gave me a long kiss. She withdrew back and held my face, caressing my groomed, short beard. "Good luck! I will be here waiting for you, my love."
With a smirk, I pushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "I know you will."
I walked out of there, waving my hand. Looking back, I gave her my most perfect smile to stop with all her worries.
