Jake
I was sitting with Matt at a bar, waiting for Carlos. After a week in that goddamn place, he was finally back in New York. But he did not want to say anything over the phone, and my day dragged on at work.
"Why are you so windy up about it, Jake? This is good news. The girl has a brother now, and he might take the burden off your shoulder."
I looked at Matt with my jaw set. He was ranting for hours.
"I'm just saying, buddy. Alison has some family now, and you no longer need to feel pressured. You can give her to his care." Matt took a sip of his whiskey before continuing. "If it helps you sleep better at night, you can still cover the cost of her treatment.
Give Olly the green light in the divorce settlement. It isn't like you don't have money to spare."
I clung to my drink, and he noticed I was doing my best not to tell him to fuck off.
Matt put his glass on the table and groaned. "What's the problem here, Jake? I know you, and I can see there is one."
How could I tell him what was wrong since I was unsure? I just knew I was not fond of this brother dearest around Alison.
I was about to tell Matt to drop the questions when I saw Carlos entering the place. I was glad the bell saved me because Matt would only shut up once he found the source of my problem.
"Took you long enough, Carlos. I thought I was a priority in your life."
He pulled a chair across from me and sat. "Well, your shopping list was long, my friend. Brother dearest Stormy has quite the reputation, and the orphanage could not have found a better name for him. He's quite the thing, and Stormy fits him like a glove."
I fisted the table and looked at Matt, who already had his eyes on me. "What did I tell you? And you two were making fun of me. I could feel it in my bones. Stormy was bad news."
Carlos exchanged glances with Matt but dropped it and ordered a drink on my tab. He slid the folder to my side and addressed me after the waitress left.
"They weren't close at the orphanage. The opposite, actually. Stormy was a big bully who took pleasure in taunting her and other kids. She never stood up to him, and he picked on her the most, from breakfast to dinner." Carlos looked around to see if anyone was paying attention to us. "I had to increase our 'donation' there. The people weren't very forthcoming this time and asked many questions. You don't want them to know she's your wife, so I opened the wallet big time."
I rubbed my head, reading the file. "You know money isn't a problem, Carlos."
He just nodded.
After checking the folder's contents, I gave Carlos his next assignment. "I want you to follow him. See what he does during the day and who he speaks to."
