Jake
Alison barely spoke to me at dinner and slept on her side of the bed again last night. But I do not care. She can keep up with her attitude all she wants because I will not change my mind.
The distance between her and that piece of shit for at least a few days was necessary until I was confident that everything would turn out well.
My phone rang, and it was Carlos. I was waiting for his call. "What else did you find?"
"He arrived in New York City six months ago. Before that, he was in 12 different places since he left Pennsylvania."
That was not a good thing. "Why is that?"
Carlos sighed on the other side of the line. "He's a gambler."
I rubbed my forehead. That was worse than I expected. "Should I be worried here, Carlos?"
"Do you mean more than you already are, Jake?"
"I mean, can he put her in danger? Does he have a loan shark after him here or in any state?"
"I don't know yet, but you know you are a priority, and I'm looking after it myself."
"Thanks, man."
"You don't need to thank me. My bill will be extra expensive this time," Carlos laughed.
"Shut up!" I laughed. "How about the tail? Did you put your man after him yet?"
"I pulled one from a job, but he's only starting tonight."
"That's fine. Alison is grounded. Phil is dropping and collecting her from school and the clinic. She won't see him for a couple of weeks."
"She's WHAT?????" He screamed on the phone, and I had to take it from my ear.
I rolled my eyes. "Long story."
"You do know she's your wife, and you fuck her, right? She isn't your kid."
"I will fucking punch your face next time you say those words about my wife."
He chuckled. "Jake, I'm starting to think you two are love birds now, and you forgot to send me the memo. Because, man, the number of times you've said my wife this week didn't fit in my notebook."
I did not have time for his funny side right now. "Right, that's it! I'm hanging up now. Go do your job for which I am paying highly."
I pressed end, and I could still hear his laughter.
I looked outside, and the sky was light blue. Like Father had said the other day, it was getting hotter and hotter now. Soon, I have to think of a place for us to go for Alison to do her summer collection. Given the Stormy situation, planning a long weekend getaway out of state for Jamie's birthday would be ideal.
I was working extra hard these days, and I grabbed my keys and headed back to Riverside without thinking twice. The swimming pool season had started, and I would jump on mine this afternoon.
