Jake
We sat on the fluffy carpet by the fireplace. Alison's back rested on my chest. The fire kept the family room warm, and Freddy lay at Alison's feet. He goes wherever she goes. The house was silent, with the kids in bed and the dog asleep.
"We'll be flying at the end of next week to England. I want us to spend our wedding anniversary there."
Alison turned to look at me. "I thought we couldn't fly while the lawsuit takes place." She looked into my eyes, worried. "I don't want to go without the children, Jake."
"We all will be going. I won't leave the children behind." I rubbed her cheek with the back of my hand. "You trust me, don't you?"
"Of course, I trust you, my love." Alison's eyes were glued to mine, waiting for anything I had to say.
"Good!" I kissed her forehead and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her closer. "Then trust me, I've found a way to stop Gracie's claims for good."
This evening I felt at peace. I had a couple of days to digest everything after the art gallery and figured out what to do.
Alison stayed quiet again in my arms, only enjoying the feeling of us being together there. I was not pleased about hiding things from her again. But if she asks me how I would make Gracie go away, I will lie to her.
It was early, but Alison was sleeping nearly at the same time as the boys. Her eyes were heavy, and I whispered in her ear. "I told Matt I would meet him for a drink. Are you ok to be alone?"
With a sleepy sigh, she nodded. "Yes. I will just sleep, and the boys won't wake up."
I kissed her nose and smiled. "Let me help you upstairs, then."
I offered my hand to Alison and helped her up. Freddy woke up stretching his paws as he noticed his favourite human was on the move. I looked at him and shook my head. "You wait here, pal. I will get back to take you to bed, too."
One thing I never allowed was Freddie upstairs in our bedroom. The last thing I needed was for him to get used to my bed and I had to fight him off it.
After getting everybody settled and the doors locked, I called a taxi to drive me to a bar near where we lived. Matt had already a drink in hand and another waiting for me at the table.
"You took your time today, didn't you?" He slid the drink over to me.
I rolled my eyes. "I was helping my pregnant wife to bed, Matt. Any more complaints?" It was only 8:45 p.m., but the place was busy.
"Is Olly joining us today?"
I grinned. "Nope, he's in the city, probably fucking Savannah right now."
Matt laughed. "Good for him. She's hot. Never had a red-haired girl before."
"And you'll have to find another that isn't Savannah. Olly likes her way too much to share with you."
