Jake

It was past 9:30 p.m. when I was climbing inside my Range Rover to drive to the train station. I spotted Alison getting out of the station. Slowly, I followed her. I wanted to know how she would figure out where home was.

I called her again, and it went straight to voicemail like the other hundreds of times. Alison took the right direction, but she did not know what turn to take after a few minutes of walking. I pressed on the gas and stopped beside her.

Alison took a while to recognise my car in the dark and stepped back, thinking it was somebody else. I lowered the passenger's window and said through gritted teeth. "Get in!!"

She entered the car, put on the seatbelt, and looked at her hands. It was clear to Alison that she was in trouble, and I was not pleased.

I gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white. "Have you any idea how worried I was today, Alison? Do you have any consideration for me whatsoever?"

"My phone died." She said in a lower tone.

"I didn't finish, Alison! Do you even know how to get to the goddamn gate community? You wandered at this hour on the streets without knowing where to go. You certainly couldn't call Phil to pick you up without a phone."

Alison glanced at me, trying to fix everything. "I am sorry, Jake. But I didn't have a charger, and neither did Pat. I don't remember the phone numbers by heart, and I lost track of time."

Of course, she was with that scumbag. Alison had seen him every day since she met him. My blood boiled; right now, I could put her over my knee and take my belt out if I supported violence. And before I even noticed, the angry words were out of my mouth.

"You are grounded!!!!! Phil will drop you off and collect you from school and the clinic."

Her brows furrowed, and her face reddened. "WHAT???? You can't do that. I am not a child."

"To me, it seems like you are, and I don't give a fuck what you are right now, Miss. As far as my knowledge goes, you are grounded till Jamie's birthday, and no tears or blood will change my mind."

"Jake, you're being a brute." Alison crossed her arms and looked outside.

"I brute, I will be if I put you over my knee and trust me, you are pretty close right now, Mrs Stewart."

Alison widened her eyes. "You wouldn't lay a hand on me."

With a furious face, I spat out. "Keep pushing me, and you will find out."

She dropped it and did not say a word during the drive. I am unsure if it was out of fear or because she realised she was on the wrong side and should not push further.

By the time I lay in bed, I was calm because she was unharmed. I knew I would not be that upset if she were with anyone but brother dearest. Would I have got angry with her? Of course. But I would be less irritated than I was now.
