It was the best of times, the worst of times.
It was graduation day. The university days finally done, gone with the wind. Walking across the sunlit courtyard, with her heart pounding immensely from excitement and anxiety, Jisoo smiled. Then, a familiar figure appeared amidst the very festive sight.
"Nini!" A little squeal was let out. In a burst of emotions, Jisoo rushed to hug her friend.. and something else.
"Hello, second favorite friend." Jennie smirked.
It was an inside joke between her and Jennie. Though they weren't always the best and closest of friends, they were pretty quick to wit, therefore they had maintained their friendship for the last four years.
Chaeyoung and her girlfriend, Ruru, finally joined the two, followed by Lisa and her boyfriend, Fredrick. They all celebrated the end of their undergraduate in their insufferable major of Nutrition Science. Being glad they stuck around no matter how rocky the path got, they smiled while conversing about it for some while, all while waiting for their queue to get to the venue of the graduation ceremony. It was a bittersweet time, the best time to converse of reminiscing about the past days.
Jisoo had dreamed of this day for years—the culmination of all their hard work, their friendships, and... that one secret she'd kept so closely guarded. Her fingers tightened around her cap, the edges wrinkling slightly in her grip. Today was the last day they'd walk these grounds as students, and she knew that meant it was her last chance.
The venue was crowded. Everyone they knew and they didn't knew were there. The professors, the students, the families, everyone was thrilled. Everything seemed perfect to the eyes of the tearful beholders. One wonderful moment to all those attended the ceremony.
Chaeyoung and Lisa with their respective partners have parted ways to sit some feet away from the two. Jisoo felt like she was losing her breath the whole time, since she didn't expect to sit beside Jennie. It was a farewell bidding towards her someone, after all.
"Sweet, we know no one from our seats here," Jennie whispered sarcastically towards Jisoo. She seemed a bit annoyed, but there was a smile escaping her lips which was weirdly uncanny.
"Well, at least we have each other." The silence sunk in between them after that, even when the whole room was filled with conversations and cheers.
The professors, the best students, and the dean gave speeches. It was meaningful yet meaningless. However, at least it was the last time they had to listen to all those too much words anyways, so they didn't really have to complain about it.
There was this tension. Maybe, it was Jisoo imagining it, but she felt her heart palpitating and the air between her and Jennie becoming so tight like it's pulling them together. She felt ecstatic, magnetic. Jisoo couldn't help but steal stares towards her, knowing there was no way she could confess towards her long time crush. Yes, she liked Jennie all those time, but she didn't want to ruin their friendship just because she wanted her so badly.
"So, are you going back to Brisbane after graduation?" Jisoo embraced herself to ask Jennie softly, trying not to distract the other students who definitely cares about what the professor was talking about if not busy on their phones obsessing over Pedro Pascal's new Calvin Klein commercial or whatever was trending on X that day.
"I'm... not. How about you?" Jennie has an unreadable strange expression on her face. "Wait, I forgot you literally are from around here."
Jisoo chuckled a little. "Well, after collecting all those achievements and internships, of course it wasn't for nothing."
