"Mom. I'm a lesbian," she said.
Jennie's words should had an effect. But, her mom was nonchalant. Her face was still stiff, eyes looking directly into her daughter's eyes.
"And? That doesn't mean you can be single at this time and age. Not when you're literally wasting your time partying all day and all night with daddy's money! You're useless in this house and you have no career and no family. We offered you to study wherever you want but you wasted everything back in Harvard. You were engaged to your best friend's brother so our family business could merge-"
"You're treating me like some kind of property! Of course, I ruined everything before I could get married to Jisoo's brother, he's an idiot!"
"Well, he certainly does match your stupidity! You told us you were going to be a model and an idol and an actress and an influencer and blah blah blah blah.. Everything fucking failed! We gave you the money to start a business, but what happened next? It failed! Yes, I raised a fucking failure-"
"You didn't even raised me to begin with!"
"Oh? Really? This is how you treat your mother when she sacrificed her career as a ballerina just to take care of you?!"
Jennie just rolled her eyes.
"Of course, my daughter would treat me like this and embarrass me in front of the whole family in the biggest wedding party of the richest family on earth.." Her mom sighed, acting like she gave up.
"Fine! I'll give you what you want," replied Jennie, enraged still. "But don't complain with who I bring or what I may give you next," warned her.
"Whatever you bring will be better than what you are anyways."
As Jennie stormed away from her room, the air in the wedding party felt suffocating as if her mother's phantom hands were trying to choke her. Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead, and a grand staircase spiraled down into the ballroom, where the guests mingled and gossiped. Jennie needed fresh air. She needed space away from all the suffocating expectations, judgements, and glares that came with being the black sheep of her influential family.
Stepping out onto the balcony, Jennie pulled out her phone, hands still shaking from the heated argument with her mother earlier. A few deep breaths later, she found herself scrolling through her contacts, landing on a number she had never thought she'd call.
"You really mean it?"
"Yeah, sure. Contact me if you need anything.. a hearty conversation, a cup of coffee, or any good sex if you're that desperate in which I don't think you would be," the girl said as she ended with a light, sweet chuckle.
Lalisa Manoban.
It's too underwhelming to call her interesting and amazing, Lisa was one hell kind of an exhilarating beauty. Lisa was a charismatic, street-smart woman, known for her charm and confidence, someone Jennie had met by chance during a wild night out in Vegas.
Jennie didn't know Lisa well, but she knew Lisa was the type to take on any challenge, the type to turn heads, and the type to make a memorable entrance. So, her reckless fingers decided to call Lisa.
The phone rang once, twice, and Jennie nearly hung up before she heard Lisa's voice on the other end, smooth and teasing. "Well, well, well, if this isn't the infamous Jennie Kim. To what do I owe the honor of this call?"
Jennie giggled. Of course, Lisa would know how to enlighten her for even her soft teasing voice could just flutter her away and make all her problems feel lighter than a feather.
"I really need a favor."
"Well, judging from your tone, I assume it's not about tasting my forbidden fruit, yes?"
