What a nightmare: you're just close enough to see, yet too far to reach.

There she was, a beauty, in her long white dress, like a snow queen, like a princess she's always been, reflecting the light of the sun through the cathedrals' stained glass windows. Her veil just covered a part of her hair. In front of her was a man, holding her hand with a smile and tearful eyes.

Jennie couldn't help but sweat under her wedding gloves as her heart exploded with flowers. It was her wedding after all. Finally, after years of waiting, she found her one true love and he was standing right in front of her. Finally, after all that time, someone that deemed her worth how much she knows she's worth found her. It was as if fate had taken to its hands an amazing story to be written. It was as if destiny had tied them with a red string, for this life and more lives together.

Jennie's family were holding their breaths as they looked at their daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin, grinned from ear to ear. Jihyuk's family were looking at the pair with huge smiles across their faces, proud of their son, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin, as he stood at the altar and spoke his vows. The priest listened in joy to the newly wed couple.

Though most were in bliss and gratefulness for this new couple's way as they started to embark on a fresh path of their lives, some people felt at loss. Well, not some but one in particular. As Jisoo, Jennie's maid of honor, smiled towards the couple, she couldn't help but feel her heart wrenching.

Jisoo knew she couldn't stand there any longer with her feet on the ground as she watched the love of her life get married to some man they met at the club. She remembered when they first met Jihyuk in the club, saving Jennie's drink before it got spiked, though some time before the wedding, Jisoo found out it was a planned meeting and saving. She remembered when Jihyuk screamed at Jennie for wearing his hoodies because she thought they were cute and when Jisoo ended up buying tons of hoodies for Jennie so she wouldn't get yelled at again. She remembered the way Jennie crawled into her chest, sobbing as she comforted Jennie with her arms wrapped around Jennie's body, because Jihyuk accidentally and drunkenly fucked Jennie's cousin and got syphilis. She remembered all the bad things he had done as if it was yesterday, engraved in her mind was how he had always hurt her Jennie came back with peace before wounding her again and again and again.

Jisoo had lost count on how many times she had reminded Jennie of how awful her man was. However, her ears seemed to be blocked by euphoric love and she couldn't listen to what her best friend said. It pained Jisoo even more when Jennie asked Jisoo to be her maid of honor, because Jihyuk had proposed to her and she excitedly said yes.

While Jisoo's heart was burning to take revenge on Jennie's side, she was weak at how Jihyuk had already threatened her the day before the wedding. She knew she could only plaster a smile and waking up to avenge or take revenge for the sake of Jennie or even stopping the marriage would be a dumb idea.

Jisoo tried to drown her feelings that day of the wedding. As the noises in her ears grew and grew, she couldn't help but to grow helpless. Maybe, it would be better to die out of bleeding exhaustion because she got staked by a thousand needles than to watch her best friend say her vows and walked down the aisle, with his hand in her hand, towards the new hell she was going to face.

Jisoo stood there, her face locked in a forced smile as the ceremony moved forward. It felt like she was suspended outside of herself, watching Jennie’s eyes dance with happiness, oblivious to the darkness that lay ahead. Jisoo could practically feel the walls closing in, and the pressure of years of silence weighed heavy in her chest. She wanted to scream, to shout to Jennie and shake her from her love-induced daze, to pull her away from a man who had shown his cruelty over and over again. But she knew it would fall on deaf ears.

As the ceremony came to an end and the couple turned to face the crowd, Jennie’s face was a radiant picture of bliss, a sight so beautiful it hurt Jisoo’s soul. The guests rose, clapping in celebration, tossing flower petals as Jennie and Jihyuk stepped down the aisle together. Jennie turned back, meeting Jisoo’s eyes just for a moment, and her face softened. It was a look of gratitude, maybe even apology, as if she somehow knew the burden Jisoo was carrying.

But that wasn’t enough.

Jisoo couldn’t feel the applause or hear the celebratory music. She was numb, drowning in her own bitterness. Her heart felt like it was being crushed, and as Jennie’s gaze drifted away, she realized this was truly the end of her own hopes, her own dreams of a life with Jennie. She’d always believed that someday, Jennie would open her eyes and choose her. But now, it was clear that the fairy tale was dead.

As the guests filed out, Jisoo stayed behind, watching the last few petals float gently down to the floor. She clutched her bouquet, now crushed in her hands, and stared at the empty aisle, wondering how love could feel so much like grief.

“Jisoo,” came a soft voice behind her. She turned to see Jennie, smiling, blissful in her bridal glow, unaware of the tornado ripping Jisoo apart inside. “Thank you for being here, for standing beside me. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

Jisoo forced a smile, swallowing the words she wanted to say, the words that would tear everything apart. “Of course,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, strangled by her pain. "I'm happy for you," she lied, "Good luck, babe."

And as Jennie walked away, leaving her there in the empty cathedral, Jisoo finally let the tears fall, each drop carrying away a part of her hope, her love, her dreams. With the deafening silence of the cathedral, she was left alone, with nothing but a hollow ache, knowing she would always be the one who loved from afar, close enough to see, but never close enough to reach.

Maybe one day, when life would somehow be kinder towards the two, Jisoo wouldn't be drinking arsenic in a cathedral after the love of her life married the wrongest man she could wed.
