It was a few days after my interview, and I was just waiting to hear. Chris was out at the grocery store, and I offered to go with him, but he insisted he could go alone. I had to hide my excitement, I hated grocery shopping and I was thrilled he went alone. Dodger and I were laying on the couch together watching a movie when my cellphone rang. I groaned as I leaned over Dodger and grabbed it from the coffee table and then saw it was the hospital.
"This is it bubba." I said and answered the phone.
"Hello?" I asked trying not to sound nervous or excited.
"Is this Geneva Collins?" I heard the voice asked.
"Yes, it is." I said.
"Geneva, this is Melissa Scott from the hospital." She said and I smiled.
"Yes ma'am, it's nice to hear from you." I said and she sighed. I wasn't sure what that meant.
"I wanted to call and talk to you about the job..."
"Of course." I said hoping she was going to ask me when I could start.
"Well, I took your application to the board, and we all vetted you like we do all candidates for nursing positions. We know most places may not, but we like for everyone to see who will be joining the team."
"Of course." I said and I smiled at Dodger.
"It was brought up in the meeting from a board member that you are in the public eye quite a lot lately..."
"Well...not as much as I used to be, and it's died down a lot." I said.
"Miss Collins, please understand with our hospital, everything is about discretion, privacy and only wanting the best for our patients so they get better and a safe work environment for our workers."
"Of course, I want all of that too."
"Well, we feel that if we bring you on board as a member of the nursing staff that wont be the case. We understand that media coverage has died down but what happens when something happens for you in a good or bad way and you're back in the news? We don't want media camped out in front of our work environment."
"So, you're saying..." I trailed off closing my eyes knowing the answer and trying to hold off the tears.
"We are very sorry Miss Collins, but we aren't going to be able to offer you the job." Melissa said and I tried to hide the raged breath a took.
"Thank you for the opportunity." I said.
"We are sorry Miss Collins." She said.
"Have a good day." I said and hung up the phone. I tossed it back on the coffee table and laid back on the couch to cuddle Dodger.
Again, I wouldn't get a job because I found love. There was nothing I would give up my relationship for, I love Chris, I want to be with Chris. We would just figure something out and I would talk to him. I knew he would already feel bad for making me miss out on a great job opportunity, but it wasn't his fault.
I was calming myself down when the gate buzzed opened and I looked to see who it was and was confused, not thinking she was coming over. I got up, Dodger quickly on my heels and I opened the door.
"Hey." I said to Lisa as she walked up to the front door and she smiled.
"Hey, I wanted to stop by since I was in the neighborhood." Lisa said and I smiled as we hugged.
"Well, I always love seeing you. Chris is at the store, but he should be home soon." I said and Lisa nodded as we walked into the living room and Lisa looked at me as we sat down.
"What's going on? You've been crying." Lisa said and I sighed.
"I heard back from the hospital, where I had the interview..." I trailed off and she sighed reading my mind.
"Oh Eva, I'm sorry." Lisa said and I just sighed shaking my head.
"I mean I knew being with Chris would come with its challenges, I just didn't think having a job would be one of them." I said and he huffed a laugh.
"Oh sweetie, it's never easy." Lisa said and I nodded. "So what's the plan now?"
"I have no clue, I want to work, I don't want to just sit home and let people think I'm mooching off of Chris." I said and she sighed.
"We know you aren't mooching off of Chris and he knows it too. Whoever thinks that can go take a short walk off a cliff. All I know I could always use help at the theater if that's something you are interested in." Lisa said and I smiled slightly.
"The reason I'm losing jobs is because of Chris, wouldn't that attract too much attention there too?" I asked and Lisa shook her head.
"No, they know I work there, and the girls help, never a problem. We could always just use the help." She said and I nodded.
"I'll think about it." I said and she smiled and gave me a small hug as the door opened and Dodger went barking towards the door.
"Hey bubba." Chris said bringing in groceries. I walked over to help him, and he smiled giving me a small kiss but saw my eyes.
"You were crying..." Chris said, and I just slightly shook my head.
"It's okay...we'll talk later." I said and he sighed. He leaned in giving me another small kiss.
We walked the groceries to the kitchen as Lisa followed us.
"So did my mom make you cry?" Chris asked and we all laughed as Chris and I started putting everything away. I smacked his arm.
"I didn't get the job at the hospital." I said and Chris stopped putting things away.
"What?! Why?" Chris asked and I just looked at him and he sighed. "Because of being with me...?" Chris asked and I just gave a small nod.
"Yeah, but you know what...it's their lose. I don't need their job at the hospital. Your mom offered me a job at the theater. She said they could always use the help." I said and Chris smiled at Lisa.
"I think it's a great idea." Chris said and I smiled with a nod.
"I think so too." I said.
"So, you accept?" Lisa asked excitedly.
"I accept." I said and she rushed over to me and hugged me.
This was a change, and I knew that, but it was time to start thinking of the new life role I needed to take being with Chris seeing as how I saw my future with him...if only I knew what he felt and what he was planning for our future.
