IT'S LUNCHTIME AND JIM HAS DISAPPEARED. She wasn't very worried. It was only further proof that he was definitely up to something. She sat in the break room alone, a grape soda and lunch set out in front of her. She was just about to dig into her macaroni when the break room door slammed open. A startled gasp ripped from her throat, hands moving to shield her face. After a moment, her eyes blinked open and she spotted Dwight closing the door behind him.
"Jesus Christ, Dwight. You almost gave me a heart attack!" she snapped. He approached her with a determination that almost made her step away from him. "You trusted me with your secret," he said, eyes locking onto hers. Eyebrows puckered in confusion. "The secret when you kissed Jim."
"Well, you kind of walked in at the right time, but whatever," she said, but waved off the technicalities. Dwight seemed to appreciate that. "I am trusting you with my secret now." She nodded, motioning toward the chair before her. She already had a Dwight secret in the safe, what could possibly go wrong if she added another one?
Dwight sat, hands moving to his lap. He looked nervous and that alone had Evelyn worrying. "It's okay," she reassured him with a gentle smile. "Your secret is safe with me. I promise." In that moment, Dwight understood many things. He understood why Pam seeked Evelyn out when she had a problem. And he understood why Jim loved her. It was her kind heart, and her sincerity. It was one of a kind. "Angela and I are in a romantic relationship."
She had to sit back. Her eyes grew wide in disbelief. "You know her the best in the office, except maybe Oscar. I need your help with picking out a Valentines Day gift." She still couldn't believe her ears. Never in a million years did she expect Dwight and Angela to start seeing each other. "Evelyn," Dwight blurted out, snapping the brunette from her thoughts. Wide eyes met his. "Sorry. I just— that was unexpected."
His eyebrows frowned. Evelyn was quick to backtrack. "It's only surprising because of the pairing. It's not surprising that you're dating anyone." He huffed. The question had yet to be answered. He just needed her help finding a gift. "Evelyn, focus. Please." She nodded and shifted in her seat. All she had to do was think Angela.
"She loves cats, and babies dressed in grown up clothes. And she loves herbal tea." Her lips pursed, eyes squeezing closed to think better. What else was there? "Honestly, Dwight... she probably just wants to feel like you care about her, you know? That you appreciate her and love her. It doesn't have to be anything grand or crazy. It could be something small like cozying up to her favorite movie, or getting her her favorite chocolates." She bit her bottom lip. She wondered if Jim thought the same or if he was planning something extravagant.
