Rory and Logan found themselves sitting in Richard and Emily's living room, with Millie in between them. They hadn't seen Mitchum and Shira in almost a year, so it was awkward, to say the least.
"So, child" Shira said. Logan rolled his eyes. Was it really so hard to use her name? "How old are you now?"
Millie looked up at Logan. She could be very outgoing, but she was also shy when she didn't feel comfortable, and being 3 years old, sitting in a room full of adults, and only one other kid who was 5 years older than you, probably wasn't very comfortable.
"She just turned 3 two weeks ago" Logan told her.
"She doesn't speak?" Mitchum asked
"She does" Rory said
"Hmm" Shira squeaked
"She's a very bright child" Emily said
"I'm sure" Shira said, eyeing Millie
"Lorelai, Luke, how's the wedding planning going?" Emily asked in an attempt to move the conversation to a place with less potential for argument. Lorelai and Luke had gotten engaged about 5 months before this.
"It's going" Lorelai said
"It's not the only wedding that should be getting planned" Shira muttered under her breath
Lorelai hated the way that Mitchum and Shira (specifically Shira) treated Rory. "Im sorry, do you have something you need to say?"
Oh no. Rory groaned internally. She loved her mother and she appreciated that she always had her back, but Lorelai had just unintentionally opened a huge can of worms.
"Just that there's no reason for Rory and Logan not to be married" Shira said "they should have been married before she had that child. Hell, they should have been married before she got pregnant, but no" she dragged out the 'o' "she got herself knocked up and threw away my son's reputation in the process"
"Wait just a minute" Richard said "Yes, they made a mistake, but it's in the past. There's no need for us to dig this all up again"
"My daughter is not a mistake!" Logan said, angrily "she may have been a surprise, but she is in no way a mistake, and there are no regrets about the way she came to be!"
Rory thought back to the time she met Straub and Francine. "Go in the other room, babe" she said to Millie. She didn't want her to be in the room with everyone yelling, especially when it was her that they were yelling about.
"Gigi, go with her" Christopher said. Gigi was old enough to have some idea of why everyone was upset, but that didn't mean that she needed to be in that room. She took Millie's hand and led her into Richard study.
Once the kids were out of the room, Mitchum spoke. "You two made a mistake." He put emphasis on 'mistake'. That made Rory's blood boil. 'Mistake' implies regret. It said that they didn't want Millie which couldn't be further from the truth. "That mistake makes every person in this room look bad, not just you. You two may not have regrets about that child, but I'm sorry, some of us are unhappy with having a bastard grandchild"
"Hey!" Rory yelled "I know you don't like me, and that's fine because I sure as hell don't like you, but don't you ever use a word like that to talk about my daughter again!" She didn't care what people thought, or how they spoke about her, but she absolutely had a problem with anyone talking about her kid the way Mitchum just had.
"Well, the truth hurts" Shira said
"Enough!" Logan shouted "all of you! We get that none of you like the way Millie was brought into this world, but quite frankly, I don't give a shit! Wether you like it or not, she's here. She's happy, and she's thriving, and she has a good life. She doesn't know that our family is any different, because if you actually cared, you'd see that it's not. The only thing we're 'missing'" he used finger quotes "is a piece of paper, so enough! Enough of the judgement and enough of the arguing. Just stop, because it's not helping anyone, but it is gonna end up hurting a very sweet little girl! Nobody gives a damn about your reputations! Nobody except you cares that we're not married! And nobody asked for your opinion! So please, just do us all a favor and shut the fuck up!"
The room was quiet. Rory put her hand on Logan's arm "Logan" she said softly.
Logan glanced at Rory and then looked over to where Millie was standing in the doorway, half hiding behind the wall, with tears in her eyes. Logan's heart dropped. He never yelled around her. Ever. He felt terrible the she'd just heard him yell, and he felt worse that it clearly upset her. He went over to her and crouched down in front of her. He went to grab her hands but she moved away. It was like a knife in his heart. "Millie, I'm so sorry I yelled" He reached for her hand again, and this time she let him.
"Are you mad?" She asked quietly
"Not at you" he told her. She took a step closer to him and he wrapped his arms around her. "I love you so much, and I'm so sorry that I made you sad" He picked her up and went to sit back down. She kept her arms around him and her head on his shoulder. The beauty of a 3 year old is that sometimes all they need to feel better is some snuggling.
After a very tense dinner, Mitchum and shira, and Chris and Gigi all went home, leaving Richard and Emily, Lorelai and Luke, Rory and Logan, and Millie, sitting in the living room, eating dessert.
"You know I think this might've been the most intense Friday night dinner yet" Lorelai said
"Tonight was awful" Rory said. She let out a deep breath.
"Why?" Millie asked
Rory laughed a little. "Come here" she pulled Millie onto her lap. "Do you know that I love you a lot?"
"I love you a lot" Millie said
"Not as much as I love you"
"Yes" Millie giggled
"Not possible" Rory said and kissed Millie's cheek
"So Millie" Lorelai said "I heard that you had a really great birthday party"
Millie was obsessed with the monkeys. She even had a little monkey plushie that she took everywhere with her. So naturally when she was asked what kind of party she wanted, that's what she went with. "I had a monkey party!"
"We had 12, very loud 3 year olds running around our house with monkey masks on, and it was great" Rory said
"And we had a cake that looked like a monkey" Millie told them
"Oh wow, that's so special" Lorelai smiled
Eventually Millie fell asleep on Logan, which was their sign that it was time to go. When Rory and Logan got to the dragonfly, where they were staying for the week, they put Millie to sleep before getting ready for bed themselves and getting into bed.
"Are you ok?" Logan asked. Dinner was...a lot, and he wanted to make sure that she was ok.
"I'm fine" she said. She really was. She knew that not everyone was happy about the way Millie came to be, but she also knew that at the end of the day she had almost everyone's support. So if Mitchum and Shira couldn't let go of what happened, that was their burden and not hers. She was worried about Logan though. She saw the look on his face when he realized that Millie heard him yell. Not once in her entire life had Millie heard Logan (or Rory) yell, and she knew that he felt terrible about it. "Are you ok?"
"I yelled at her, Ace"
"You didn't yell at her, you yelled for her" she said
"I yelled for you" he told her "they treat you like crap. They act like it's only your fault that you got pregnant. As if I didn't have a part in it. I couldn't let them keeping saying the things they were saying"
"I love you a lot, you know that?"
"I love you too"
