"Here's the record of the patient in room 307, Doc" Aniya ng isang nurse sa'kin.
"How about the patient in room 308?" Tanong ko sa kanya.
"Doc, Hiningi po ni Doctora Kim kanina, nag ka conflict kasi kanina sa patient so she took over kasi wala ka daw." Saad nito.
"Next time, call me first before you give the records to another doctor. Bago pa si Hanna dito. We can't trust her that much, yet" Saad ko at umalis. Im not talking from something, but I'm talking according to reality. To us Doctors, Patients are our first priority.
Naglakad ako papuntang room 308 to check the patient. Binuksan ko 'yung pinto at bumungad sakin si Hanna. She was checking the patients vitals. Iyong pasyente naman natutulog lang.
"Nag ka conscious naba siya?" Tanong ko dito. Napatigil siya at tumingin sa gawi ko.
"Not yet, but all of her vitals are fine" saad nito. I nodded tapos tiningnan ko 'yung eye color ng pasyente at 'yung heartbeat nito. It was normal.
"Ano ba ang nangyari?" Tanong ko.
"She went into arrest, so I took over and did the CPR" Aniya, tumango lang ako habang nakatingin sa patient.
"Bakit ka late?" Tanong nito.
"I dont answer questions that are not related with the patients or this hospital" Saad ko at tumalikod para umalis.
"Wait, Craige!" Tawag nito sa'kin.
"The records" Aniya at inabot sa'kin ang record.
"Keep it, She's your first patient" I saw a hint of happiness in her eyes before leaving.
Nag check pa ulit ako ng iba kong patients at nagpatawag ng meeting for my department dahil may ooperahan kami. Agad silang dumating at the exact time kaya nakapagsimula agad ako.
"We will be having an operation, Ramirez, prepare for the anaesthesia, the operation will last 5 hours. I will not participate on the operation. Doc. Fuentes you will be the assistant and you... Hanna... You will lead the operation" Saad ko. Nagulat siya at akmang magsasalita na sana pero inunahan ko na.
"Get ready! Ive sent the records of the patient already." Saad ko at umalis. Narinig ko ang pagtawag ni Hanna sa'kin.
"Yes, Doc. Kim?" Tanong ko dito.
"Why am I the lead?" Tanong nito. I know she would ask it.
"Prove your skills to me then I will fully accept you as my team" saad ko sa kanya. Nagulat siya at agad naman itong nakabawi.
"You want me to lead so that you can see my skills?" Tanong nito.
"Yes" Diretso kong sagot. I wanted to know how good she is. I wanted to know on how she operates. I wanted to see her saving people right in front of me.
Pabalik na ako sa hospital, umalis lang ako saglit para kumain, mag sisimula na ang operation and I wanted to witness that. Nang makarating ako sa hospital, dumiretso agad ako sa Operating room. Pumasok ako kasama ang iba pang Doctors, it was our first time witnessing a new surgeon performing a surgery, I mean she's new here very new pero nasa operating room agad.
Nagsimula na si Hanna sa Operation, it was clean and there was no blood when she use scalpel, at least we have the same thing. Pinanood ko lang siya sa ginagawa niya and I was really amazed with her skills. It was my first time seeing her Operate. It was my first time seeing her wearing a coat. It was my first time seeing her holding a scalpel. It's not just about her skills but also her speed. Napansin ko ang bilis sa kamay ni Hanna. It was like a flash of light. Fast and clean. She finished the operation with just 3 hours which in fact it should be 5 or more than that.
Lumabas ako sa Operating room at kasabay din dun ang paglabas ni Hanna sa operating room. Tumigil siya at tiningnan ako.
"How was it?" Aniya sa'kin. Napahinto ako at tumingin sa kanya.
"You know, the operation" Saad nito sa'kin.
"Good Job" I said and left. Hindi ko na hinantay ang sasabihin niya, she might think that im still interested. Although I really am. She is my first love after all.
"SERIOUSLY?!" Saad ni Oliver. I knew he would react this way.
"Bro, baka kayo talaga? I mean hindi naging kayo dati, what if kayo talaga?" Aniya at tumawa.
"Damn bro, you're so damn lucky!" Aniya pa niya.
"shut it or I'll push you out of my house" Saad ko sa kanya. Napatigil siya at tumingin sa'kin.
"But seriously? What if you meet for a reason? What if this is a second chance for the two of you?" Aniya na seryosong nakatingin. I looked away when I realized what he meant.
Hindi ko maintindihan kung bakit, but ever sinced Oliver said those words Hindi na ako mapakali. Hanna and I are in the same office. In the same hospital. We operate together and we interact with patients together. Madalas din kaming magkausap dahil sa mga patient at sa hospital. Kapag nasa Operation naman siya 'yung assistant ko. There was something different in her skills. As if it came from somewhere.
I checked Hannah's background with her documents. She finished her study at america. Now it makes sense. Studying America is not easy. It requires skills and brains. But, I'm glad she made it.
"Craige" napatigil ako sa pag type ng marinig ko Ang boses niya. Our eyes automatically met. As if we already knew where to look.
"How can I help you?" Tanong nito.
"A patient came in a few minutes ago" she stated.
"So? What are you doing here? Go back!" I hissed.
"He signed a DNR according to one of our nurses. She said that he had been visiting the hospital and that you know this person" she added. I froze after hearing her. I immediately put on my Coat and rush to the ICU.
Nakarating ako and the moment I saw the patient. It made me want to cry. I didn't expect it to be him. Josh. He wasn't healthy anymore. I couldn't do but to announce his death. It was a painful experience, but there was nothing I can do anymore.
One thing that hurts about being a doctor is loosing a patient who has been part of your life already.
